Need advice - 1963 Ford F-100
I just got a 1963 F-100 that needs a 'little' work.
1. How do I find out what kind and size engine I have?
2. Any recommendations for books on:
a) general overhauling
b) specifics on overhauling 1963 F-100
c) specific engine rebuilding (for whatever engine I have)
Thank you very much!!!
Andy

Order the 48-72 parts catalog from this web site.
http://www.macsautoparts.com/
Your VIN will tell you engine size unless it has been changed.
engine choices were:
223 CID 6 cylinder
262 CID 6 cylinder (don't know if this was availble in F-100)
292 CID 8 cylinder "Y-block"
352 CID 8 cylinder
there are other web sites you will want to bookmark:

Your engine code, "C" means that it originally had a 292. But, that was 38 years ago and a lot can change in that amount of time. The only sure way to ID your engine is to get the casting number off the block (look near the oil filter).
If it is a 292, there are some good books available. The 292 was from the Y-block engine family which also included the 272 and 312 (among others). There is a Y-block forum on this site that you might want to check out for info.
For more specific information about the 292, here are some books that might interest you:
Ford Y Block Engine Book (How To Repair and Rebuild)
Ultimate American V-8 Engine Data Book 1949-1974
1963 Ford Products Engine Component Assembly Manual
All of these are available through the online store of this site.
There is a good website dealing specifically with y-blocks that you might want to check out: http://www.ford-y-block.com It has good info- be sure to read the "assembly errors" page. There is also a Y-block magazine available there and the owner of the site is working on a y-block performance book.
I hope this helps. I would still verify the exact engine type with the casting number before I went too far.
