1948 ford project

I'm in the process of purchasing a 1948 1-ton truck (i think). This truck has been sitting for 20 years but is it pretty decent shape and is complete. I was wondering how fast one of these trucks will go with the original drivetrain. Also, are flatheads extremely expensive to rebuild? Would it be possible to keep the engine and tranny but swap the differential for something more modern? How hard is it to convert to disc brakes on the front? I am looking to keep this fairly original, but I also plan to use it as a working truck. Let me know what you think

You will have a max speed of about 40-50 mph. Flatheads do cost more to rebuild than the average engine. Any F-250 (Dana 60) rear axle from '56-72 is an easy swap and are also the 67-79 F-350 (Dana 70). You can add disc brakes but it will be 5x5.5 bolt pattern than the stock 8x6.5 bolt pattern.

If by working truck you mean on a farm or very short trips, the original drivetrain would be okay but since you refer to disc brakes I assume you are talking about putting it into traffic and longer drives. A more modern drivetrain would be more reliable and more traffic friendly...

I just took my truck into a shop today for an estimate on a flathead engine re-build (threw a rod). The guy will call me next week with the $$$$ news (assuming I didn't crack my block.....with a quick look how the rod lodged into the oil pan, the mechanic thought I might of been lucky). Anyway I'll let you know next week
