Where to buy a 390 longblock

I am inquiring about where to buy a quality long block for my 68 F100.
There is quite a variance in price from 1200.00 at Autozone to 2200.00 at Jasper. Any good/bad experiences to share? Any opinions?

Jasper engines are very good, but as you have seen, very pricey. The jury is still out on places like Autozone, as it depends on who they get theirs from. There have been some good reports and some bad reports on these. I have read that several peoplehave had good luck with an online source:

www.powerpro2000.com

Have you thought of just having one built by a reputable shop? It probably won't cost all that much more, and then you can get it done to your specs. Even if you stick to basically stock parts, you can have the oil modifications done and will have a very long lasting engine. A step up in cam (RV type cam) will make some difference as well. It might be worth posting this question in the "FE" Engine Forum (352/360/390...), although I think it has been asked before, so maybe just search and read old posts there.

Good Luck and welcome to FTE!

Thanks for the reply Jayson,

I am hearing the same from another forum. It sounds right and I kind of know it down deep that I should try to do as much as I can myself. Thank you for the web address and thanks for the good info. A forum like this is awsome and I wish it was around when I did my Bronco about ten years ago.

I called around to auto machine shops in my area to get a 390 built from a good block. When I found a shop I went there and checked out their block as mine had a shredded cylinder from a broken valve. The block was already bored to .030. I selected a cam and they did the rest. I did provide the intake manifold from my old engine. It cost just under $1500 and was delivered free. Ran great. Sold the truck a few years later.
