It's a fairly straightforward exercise to narrow a high-pinion reverse-cut (not 'reverse rotation' BTW) D44 to bolt it right in to an EB..I've done two. You simply take 5" out of the long-side (pass side) tube and clamshell splice it back together, with a butt weld between the original tube ends where you cut the 5" out. Then the EB axles fit and you have the high-pinion that reduces the front drive-shaft angle and increase driveahft ground clearance. Great mod.

The correct answer to your question is yes, the early broncos did come with high pinion 44's. The one in my garage came from the factory with it.

No, the 71 to 77 had 44's, but they were the low pinion design. There was never a factory HP 44 in a Bronco before 78.
If yours has one, it has been narrowed and installed by a previous owner.
