cast vs hyperautic aluminum for 5500 rpm

I am considering cutting my budget for my engine and running cast pistons instead of hyperautic so I can put that money elsewhere on my 4x4. The problem is that I am going to be running a solid cam 270 degree and 350-360 hp I do not think this motor will last long.

KB Silvolite Hyper pistons can be found relatively inexpensively, not much more than cast. That's what I used last time, and I havn't had any problems to 6500 for the several years that I have been using this motor.

That's what I'm planning on running. I think I am looking at $1000 for a dependable 302 if I do all work.

I would be interested in seeing the dyno #'s on the engine when you test it to verify the horsepower.

What forced induction system were you planning on ? If you run much boost you might be better off with the forged pistons. ?

Thanks, David

Then mabe I should build a 383 W or 460 if the 302 can not do it.

stay away from high compression if you want a cheap build with forced induction. (no stroker) i like the 302 for mild performance but get rid of that solid cam and use hypereutectic pistons...unless you do use forced induction then i agree use forged.

I think I will get a 351 roller block and run hydraulic roller cam and hyperautic aluminum pistons. I am looking to run on 87 octane all day with no pinging!

Ok i have to be honest you are shooting at two different ends here.....You solid cam and high compression yet also to run 87 octane. You want 87? stay away from a big cam and use stock replacement pistons. My buddie's stock WRX will ping and run like crap without 93 and thats a stock car....good luck with your build.

I built a dependable 302 a few years ago that started with a factory reman roller 5.0 by City Motor Supply in Dallas Tx. Short block cost me $340 (excanged), had Silvolite 40 over hypers in it. Swapped the stock base roller out for a B303, also upgraded the el-cheapo timing set with a double row-roller. Heads were ported E7's. I also swapped the rod bolts out, one at a time, without disassembling the motor with ARP bolts. Dogged on this one for over a year, with daily "freeway" blasts to 6500 rpms. Then I swapped the heads for Canfield aluminums, and a Vic Jr intake. After 4 months of ******* on it, with freeway blasts to 7500 rpms, the block split the #4 cylinder wall. The rotating assembly never failed me.

I think I want to get a stock 1995 or 1996 351 hydraulic roller motor and do a valve job with 1.94/1.6" valves, get a 274/274 110 lsa cam, headers, and go. This is a truck and I do not need to rev sky high.
