Unhappy potential fuel pump replacement

My husband has a 97 F-250 Superduty 4x4 Powerstroke truck that he is having problems with. He thinks it may be the fuel pump but would like to rule out other sources of problem before replaceing the fuel pump. The problem he is having is he can be driving 80 mph down freeway and the truck dies. He pulls over restarts runs just fine as it was before stalling, accelerates fine pulls onto the road gets going will do it again. He has changed the fuel filter doesn't correct problem. He has had a fuel leak ,unknown origin ,for some time now. Would appreciate any advice. Thank you in advance .

Sound like a CPS CAM position Sensor.
The leak could be the pump. Look in the valley of the engine to see if fuel is puddling there.

I have a '96 that has had the same problem, it died suddenly today just at idle, but started up fine again, but I have also had a small pool of fuel in the engine valley under the turbo area. I think it is the fuel pump, but would like some more input on this if anyone has any thoughts.

Thanks

Dumb question... When you replace a leaky fuel pump, will there be any noticable difference in low end power?

hello

sounds like a cam position sensor to me also.my truck was doing the same thing.fuel leak/and or pump is probably a separate problem.i just repaced the fuel pump on mine the other day and it did not change the power at all,not to say that it wont change yours though?i would have the codes checked at a auto zone or advanced auto and i would bet it will have a cps code!easy fix also, five minute job.

Possibly, if it's introducing air into the fuel the engine would run poorly. Most mechanical pumps just start to leak or quit pumping. When my fuel pump went bad it leaked like crazy but didn't seem to effect the engine performance.

BTW: No such thing as a dumb question, I ask then all the time.

My pump leaked but I don't think it had much to do with the power. The leaks could be from a hose or gasket. If you replace the pump make sure you get a carter. If you install a new CPS and the problem does not change, do not throw the old one away. Keep it for a spare. If it does fix the problem, buy a psare and keep that one on the truck. A bad Cps can leave you stranded like mine did.

If the pump is leaking, there is a very small hole near the bottom, I think on the passenger side you can check. Only about 1/16th inch in size. You might need a mirror. Also check the hoses, the banjo gaskets and the two lines that go to the heads. There is a seal in each one. Also the vacuum switch sending unit on the side of the fuel filter could leak.

Welcome to FTE. The only dumb questions are the ones you don't ask.
