Power Steering Problem - Whats NORMAL?

I posted last month that I have hard steering when stopped while stepping on the brake. Feels like there is no power steering boost at all. The dealer claimed it was a failure in the steering box due to a leaking seal. Replaced the box. Not fixed. Dealer now says it is normal; there is not enough pumping capacity or pressure at idle to operate both the brake booster and the power steering booster. Its true that when I ease off on the brake a little and let the truck roll even just a little bit, I get steering boost.
I need a handful of guys with trucks like mine (02, 250, PSD) to go check their trucks, and let me know if they behave the same way. Mine turns with steering boost as soon as I ease off the brake and let it roll a little, but at full stop is feels like no power steering; very hard to turn wheels, and pump makes a slight growl (more like a grinch) just as if it was at a full turn stop. If you would please check your trucks and post replies, I'll either go back to the dealer for the right fix or let him know he is right.
Thanks, guys.
Warren

not an expert but: my $.02 I would have replaced the Pwr steering PUMP first if I was in a mood to replace anything at all.

them steering boxes are pricey.

OK ford shop manual says pump also and dealer SHOULD be doing a pump flow & pressure test using the POWER STEERING ANALYZER make sure those #**&* don't burn out the pump during the testing

manual suggests to test/replace the HYDRO-MAX brake booster if some vapid electric pump fails to give boost braking after a engine off brake application

I couldn't find other references to the pump in the manual

'00 shop manual, but brakes and steering both work normally (to me) all the time even at stoplights idleing

My 99 with 119k will turn my 315's while my left foot is holding the brake hard and engine is at idle with no problem. Sounds like you got a weak pump.

i have had this issue with my 01 f350 since new. the truck is on it's third p/s pump and the issue is still there. i worked at a ford dealer at the time when the truck was new and found information ford released to dealers that stated that this condition was normal for the vehicle. after findind this information i never attempted any other repairs , just learned to live with it

with my 2002, i can turn the steering wheel pretty easy with no brake but while stopped (P,N), but when i put it in D and hold the brake enough to keep the truck from moving, wheel input is a little "firmer", however it's not unbearably hard to turn, i can still turn it with my palm.

I have 4 F350 4x4 crew cabs. 1 96 old body with no problems. 1 99 built in 98 5 speed with the least steering problems. 1 99 built in 99 that had 3 pump replacements and I still cannot turn the wheel when it is stopped. 1 02 with the same problem as the 99. The dealer said its not right but they don’t have a fix unless ford recalled them in designed a stronger pump with a different gear ratio in it. They also told me that 1 of there employees fabricated and installed a pump from a F650 that once done he could turn the wheel with 1 finger.

I would like to know more about the AGR Superpump. I did a search and found people mentioning it, but seemed liked nobody pulled the trigger and bought one.

Wow! Now that's a damn good idea! I wonder what all is involved and how complicating it is??

Are the f-250-550 all same same as far as the PS Pump? Probably would be easier to use/ mount a F-550 pump if it is any better/stronger than the 250/350 pump. Anyone know if they have larger pumps???

I'd like to know as well. I have a problem of the steering is getting hard to turn when sitting still. Also, when I'm turning into a driveway the steering wheel will suddenly, and only for a split second, "freeze up" then move again when the tires hit the curb going up the driveway.

Does anybody know if the pumps are the same for the 02 models? My dad's 02 turns perfectly with one finger while sitting still......
