99 F-150

I have a 1999 F 150 4 x 4 with the 5.4 Engine

The Vehicle has 66,000 miles on it and has developed an engine noise. A Dealer
told me that ( Just Buy listening) I have a rod going out and I need to install a
new Long Block ($5,000).

Question is: With this low mileage does this sound reasonable? And what other diagostnosics (sp) other than just the human ear would you recommend

Thanks,

First time here
Tom

Hey Tom welcome to FTE. This is the Newer body F150 forum. You might try posting this in the 97-03 Forum. Here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum25/

I can't help you with the problem, but I'm sure someone there will.

Tombar,
Have you had any loss of oil pressure? If so it is likely. One other thing back years ago I had happen was the flywheel/flex-plate had a crack and it would sound alot like a rod knocking. You might have that checked out by a tranny shop.
Lotsa Luck.......

Oil Pressure remains GOOD...I took it to one Tranny shop and they said it did Not act like a bad flex plate.....They said that the thought it might be a Rod and thats when I took it to the Ford Dealer.

Just seems rather Odd to have a rod go out so soon...And the noise or Knock seems to get better when the engine is under load

Does this sound start at engine startup and then go away as the engine warms up? Some of the 5.4's have piston slap. It sounds like a rod is going out when the engine is cold and goes away as the engine heats up in a couple of minutes. Ford has issued a TSB to that affect and has tested the engines to over 100,000 miles and determined there is no long term issues. Take a listen after you've drive the truck a while and see if the sound is still there. I have the exact same issue on my '99 and it runs fine except for the noise at startup.
