Fix for oil pan dipstick leak

I have a 1974 390 Truck motor with a rear sump oil pan which has the dipstick coming out of the left side. I seem to be getting a leak around the part that is riveted to the pan and holds the dipstick tube.

My thought is to drill the rivets out, make a new gasket etc.

Is there a better way to do this?

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Thanks.

If you drill the rivets you will deposit crap in the pan. Not a big deal to an oil filter, but the pump sees the crap before the filter. I would try some contact cleaner, the good stuff, and then try to apply a bead of silicone around the flange. It will seal, but it must be super clean. Years ago there was a product called an "oil stick", kinda like a big crayon that was a leak fix. Chemical reaction even when still dirty. Never worked for me though, although the gas stick did seal a serious hole in a gas tank for me........aMP

aMoneypit,

Thanks for the reply. BTW, I can identify with your name. My wife just informed me that I have no more money in my truck budget (went quite a bit over!). I'm not even close to getting the truck on the road.

Anyway, I was going to pull the pan out and work it from there. Maybe use some Edelbrock Gasgacinch, a gasket, threaded fasteners to hold everything down.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
