Does anyone know why there are different specs on the 1997 Mountaineer V8 than the Explorer? It seems that the Mountaineer is 210hp and the Explorer is 215hp. The touque is 280 for both but both the max touque and hp are at different RPMs. Why would Ford re-tune the engine for the Mountaineer? Wouldn't they have to re-cert the re-tuned engine with the EPA?

Not doubting your research, but where dod you find it?

That is the same engine and other than badges, the same vehicle.

I can understand a Lincoln version--did not exist--being tweaked since you're paying more money, but not a Mounty.

 

I compared the specs in my owner’s manual to what I found on Edmunds.com and noticed the discrepancy between the Explorer and Mountaineer. It is possible that Edmunds is wrong. Later models have the same 215hp spec. What do Explorer owners think their specs are?
