Water in Fuel light

The light keeps coming on, the truck runs fine and I can only assume the water came from this cheap *** diesel they sell us. I have 4 of these 6.0s and not a problem one, question- will a fuel additive help the problem or does the dealer have to look at it. the truck has 15,000 miles. Thanks, Chris

Stupid question, but have you drained the fuel/water separator on it at all?

My water in fuel light keeps coming on even after I drain the separator completely after a few minutes of running. Within a half hour earlier today, I drained it 4 times, after which the indicator of water in the fuel came on four times. Any ideas? The liquid I drained does not look like water at all, but pure clean diesel fuel.

The water in the fuel light sensor is probably corroded, you can replace or unplug the problem. When you drain not everything comes out, I use some air and make sure everything is clean or you can pull the four bolts to the HFCM cover and see how corroded it actually is.

Service Procedure taken from aTSB

If corrosion on the pins is causing the WIF lamp to illuminate, clean the housing of the HFCM of any debris and replace the manifold cover / WIF sensor with Service Part 6C3Z-9B249-B following the Manifold Cover / WIF Sensor Installation/Inspection Procedure. It is not necessary to replace the entire HFCM assembly.

I had the same problem with my 2005. I drained the HFCM into a glass jar and there was no water in the fuel.

I changed the fuel filters and the light has not come back on. Even though I know there is no mileage sensor for the filters, it sure was a big coincidence that the light started coming on right at 15K miles which is the recommended mileage for changing the filters.

these fuel headers are a big pain in the butt. i have put more headers on these trucks than i have injectors lol. the updated fuel header changed the style and the problem has been resolved, the 6c3z number has a harness that is installed with the new part. by the way incase you guys did not know, it is in the 5/100000 warranty.

also if the light still comes on or if it just flickers there is a reprogram for it as well.

Happen to Me

My Water in Fuel Light kept coming on whenever I made a left turn. Draining the fuel filter nor changing filters help. Ended up taking it to the dealer. There is a TSB on this. Dealer changed the sensor and light stayed off.

When they start cloning humans, Vloney and Bowtiehatr are on the list....then one of each will be placed at every dealer. Thanks for the "little known" facts.

Thumbs up Water in fuel due to rain.

How about this one , today truck went to dealer again for WIF lamp,he said may have to drop fuel tank to get the rain water out the has accumulated from the fuel station. I proceeded to drain the HFCM, low and behold they stripped the drain plug. Upon return to the dealer they are know going to R&R the plug and resolve the problem.Would it be advisable to install an extra fuel/water separtor?

The drain plugs had a knack for getting siezed in. The updated header eliminated the fuel heater, which was apparently causing come kind of chemical reaction. You can install a drain tap from the Low Cab Forward into F-Series headers to make them easier to drain.

Do you have to buy the part from the dealer and is it hard to change? My WIF light is still coming on even after changing filters. I drained some fuel and don't see any water in it. I can't figure out what the problem is.

Lawndawg.... as stated you are under the 3/36 bumper to bumper and the 5yr/100k miles on engine. With only 15K. Take it in and let them work with it.

I assume the other 6.0's don't have this problem and they all fuel at the same place.

My '03 has same intermittant problem with the water in fuel light coming on. Only happened a couple of times, drained unit each time, got no water. Took it to the dealer, no codes. They told me about TSB to rectify this. They will replace the unit and install a jumper connection for the sensor circuit. Basically, they just eliminate the Water in Fuel sensor so light never comes on. Good or bad, it solves the annoying problem with the light. Still under warranty so it's a no charge repair. For the drain plug, put some never-seize on it before you re-install it each time you drain the unit. Plug will come out easy without stripping.
