Remove the radio and it is the same color code as the wire you disconnected for the overhead display. Disconnect it, reinsert the plug into radio and you should be in business.

Before you decide to disconnect that wire on the radio let me tell you that I disconnected that wire and yes the LED stays bright but none of the buttons light up when you turn on the headlights.
Something in the internal wiring of the radio is the cause of that, so I plugged it back in.

Wow - That would have driven me nuts if I wasn't able to figure it out! Thanks so much, man. So did anyone's work where if they unplugged that wire behind the kick panel, the radio didn't dim - I thought someone had that experience? Thanks for the help, guys.

Update: I found Billgart is no longer on the Web, so I had to use the Wayback Machine to find the information. I will use this thread to replace the link in the 6.0L Tech Folder.

Always Bright Overhead Console

This modification is to simply keep the overhead console readout from dimming when the headlights or parking lights are turned on. All that is necessary is to disconnect this wire at the passenger's side kick panel.

No, that is under the control of the rheostat on the dash, next to the headlight switch.

Regardless of the setting of the reostat the dash lights still dim by 25%. Anyway to keep them at 100% with lights on? Thx!

Glad to find this thread

However my console display would periodically not show anything. And now for a couple years hasn't worked. I haven't "poked" around in the panels yet but these are clues to the puzzle. Anyone else have a problem with their overhead display not working that found the solution?

Fairly common issue, some of the soldered components inside get loose and she goes dark. Easy to remove and send out for repair. Several places do exactly that repair for cheap. I was happy with Tanin Electric. Good read for you on this thread.

Welcome to FTE!

Will this work for the radio also? my truck (E99) does not have the over head thing (not sure if I would really want to put it in either), but I hate that the radio is so dim during the day its impossible to read it with out turning off the lights and I enjoy having the lights on (safety thing) so HELP!!! need the super smart folks to assist here! I am half tempted to put a switch in line with the radio to have a "day/night" type set up that I can flip on and off as I need to...also if you guys have pictures that would be nice too!

It would probably be easier to go behind the radio and locate that wire.

Thats kinda my thought process here, is locate the wire, cut and solder/splice the button in and put on the dash some where and rig it that way...
