Spin-on oil filters ... what an awful idea

You can also try to take a small screw driver and place it between the adapter and the filter and twist on the screwdriver a little. That should break the seal from the filter to the plate. I had an uncle who tried and tried to get a stuck filter off of a Nova . He ended up tearing the can off and then wondering "what am I gonna do now"? His brother, my other uncle was a heavy equipment mechanic and came out, put a screw driver between the block and the filter, twisted to relieve the pressure and spun it off with his hand. The first uncle pick his chin up off the floor in amazement because he had been there for better then an hour trying to get the filter off. Give it a shot and see if it works. If the Previous owner didn't "lube" the gasket before hand or tightened it up with a wrench that would also make it difficult to get off.
Can't hurt to try the twist of a screw driver.

Here's how we used to get em off: get a large enough worm drive hose clamp to go around the filter body and wrap it around the filter right at the edge in a counter clockwise direction (so the screw head is pointing to the right) and tighten as tight as you can using a socket rather than a screwdriver. Now use a giant pair of slip jaw pliers to grab the clamp from the left side, hooking the top jaw over the worm screw and turn. The clamp will help you get a solid non-slip grip and resist crushing the filter with the pliers. Never found one I couldn't get off this way.

I converted the cartridge type to the spin on for my '55 Vicky (272ci Y-8) and on the '55 F350 (223ci I-6) The adapter is a plate and a hollow mounting bolt. If I remember the plate has a top and bottom – something to remember during installation.

As mentioned earlier the spin on adapter is available for about $30 from a number of sources. Here’s a link
