I just bought a 2001 Supercrew and I am trying to get the front license plate off. The two bottom connectors are the plastic push in tabs which are no big deal. The top although I cannot figure out. They look like brass plates from the bottom side, and the top side is just a round opening with no design to loosen like a allen, torx, etc. If anyone has ideas on how to remove this thing, it would be much appreciated.
The only idea I have is to saw the plastic pieces off that are coming through the bumper, with a dremel tool, but that would leave some plastic which would be kind of hokie. Now, I'm at taking the lower air dam off to see if I can drill it out or something. Thanks again. Sean
Here in Cali specially in my town the cops like to make money as it's a state violation to run without a front plate not alone a stupid football team name.
Yeah Beemer, it's only a violation if you get caught or the cop is bored enough to pull you over for no front plate. I have not had plates on the last 4 cars I've owned and never had a problem, so It must not be that bad here.
I got all excited thinking someone had a fix for my license plate deal.....anyone else??? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

I took the license plate holder of on day two after buying the truck(day one was spent finding rubber mats). As I recall there was some prying involved and one of the plastic tabs did break. Can't remember if it was on the upper or lower mounts. I think all I used was a flat bladed screwdriver. I did scuff the plastic a tiny bit by not being careful enough. I'll see if I can find the plastic holder and check how it's mounted.
Hey beemer (SF islander) is that Treasure or Alameda (or perhaps the Rock )? I'm over in San Mateo just a stones throw from the bay, by Coyote Pt.
Oh no not the "Rock" again, i'm a native islander where the life of sand, palm trees sun, gentle breezes and good bier happen every day along with the USS Hornet, sailboats, fishing and kayaking. That would be Alameda. Met the wife in S.F., she was living in San Mateo back then. sierraben lives in S.F..
I was unable to locate the license plate frame in my closet here. I'm pretty sure it's in storage(over in my mom's garage) I'll be over there tomorrow and will check then.
Beemer,
I was born in SF and raised on an island in San Mateo. Yes, an island in San Mateo- with a beach and everything. Mom still lives there and you can see it, in old aerial photos, it was an island(and still is) before they filled in the bay to make Foster City.
Isn't Foster City sinking?
Made many full throttle runs across the San Mateo bridge years ago both on bikes and the 69 F250 flairside. Highway 280 was fun but not these days.
Used to go on sunday rides down thru Woodside and tease the cops.

Foster City sinking? well, actually, yes
'78 KZ1000 + hiway 280 = Yeehaw. Teased a few cops back then as well. I was fortunate to have laid it down, around 80 mph, and walk away -just before a drunk driver came along and completely obliterated the bike as it lay in the fast lane with a turn signal blinking. Pretty much ruined the full face helmet I had borrowed. The lesson I learned was that I was(am) to immature/irresponsible to own a machine that pops wheelies at speeds in excess of 100mph.
As gas prices rise I occasionally think about getting a bike to commute but I think/know the skill set needed to survive commuting on two wheels in the Bay Area is something gained from years of riding and not something you can learn in a safety class. Heck I won't even take my road bicycle out around town anymore and I consider myself an accomplished bicyclist- ended up *under a car on Stanford's campus as well as a few other near misses - Although I do take to the Canada/Sand Hill/ Woodside loop quite often.
*I must say, though, the worst crashes have been on the Mtn bike.
Hey Pilot, thank you so much for checking into this for me. I don't know if yours is set up the same way, but the lower is the push in plastic tabs which are no big deal. My question is regarding the uppers. They appear to be metal nuts with a threaded bolt in the center. From viewing from the bottom side, they are about quarter size and brass in color and you can see a threaded bolt in the center. The top of the bolt is completely round with no type of wrench fitting apparent. I got the design by shoving a piece of silly puddy on it. I'm wondering if this has to be drilled out, or the lower plastic piece removed, etc??? Let me know what you find out and thanks again. Sean
Found the license plate holder. All four connectors are the same. They are the little plastic tabs. As I recall it took some real effort(and a few swear words) to get them all detached. I do believe I used only a flat bladed screw driver. One of those tab removers probably would work better- the same one used on the door panel clips. On my truck the lower tabs clipped into the plastic part of the bumper and the upper tabs clipped into the metal bumper.
Hope you get it off. Have you tried the tree method as mentioned in a previous post?
Honestly, if you are pretty sure you're not going to need the holder again you could cut the front of the holder off and then you'd have more room to work.
Hey Pilot, thanks for checking into that for me. I'm wondering if I got the freak of nature set up with those top metal fastners. I think Ford was trying to deter people from pulling it off on mine, haha. Oh well, I'll figure out something. Thanks again for checking it out. Enjoy your truck. Later
Mine is a 2002 but I had the same issue. If I remember correctly the top two were rivits or similar. It has been awhile but I think I just cut the tab near the fastner.
Hey Mich, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I finally took the lower air dam off so I could access those bolts/fastners. I was able to cut them off with a Dremel without too much trouble. It looks soooooo much better without that plate on there. Thanks for the help all. Sean
