Donor Truck Again

1973 with a 360 and a 3 speed and power steering. It has a two piece driveshaft and the driveshaft is "skinny"! The 1966 truck has a fat driveshaft. Also the rearend thing bothers me. A prior post answered and said the rearend was wider in 1973 than 1966 so that makes the axles longer. Then a prior post said I just cannot take the pumpkin part and switch becasue the spline count is different between 1966 vs. 1973. Should I pay $450.00 for donor truck or not????

the axles are not longer. The frame width is different so the spring mounts will be different than the 57-72's. The axles and center sections will swap depending on whether you want 28 or 31 splines.

Greg, You might want to measure across the backing plates, they are wider. You are correct that the center can be interchanged between like 28 & 31 spline axles.

Is a donor worth $450.00, if it has a good running engine absolutly. I can sell it parted out for a bunch more than that.

two friends of mine have gone to the junkyard and brought home 73-79 axles and centers and bolted them in. Was a surprise to me that they worked. I would have never tried it. They didn't "know" as much as me, so it worked for them. Shows that all the planning in the world doesn't replace dumb luck.

Well that's really messed up. I have a rear from a 79 sitting out in my carport right now. I pulled it myself from the 79. it's a posi 31 spline with 3:70 gears. I wanted to use it in my 65, But it was too wide. I pulled the axles and the carrier, and the axles are longer then the ones from my 65. Now I'm looking for 31 spline axles that will fit my truck. I've sold the too long ones. If anybody wants to swap their 28 spline posi for a 31, let me know.
