Lightbulb Filtration: 6637 vs AFE universal filter

I know, I know, the AIS has the best filtration for our trucks and is great for eliminating intake drone, that's a given. With that said, I prefer the open filter intake design for my own reasons.

But, what if you had an AFE Proguard 7 universal filter with the same filtering area as the 6637, which would filter better? The AFE or the 6637?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here.....

More filtration area = longer filter life and better air flow. I think.....

That would be my take. that would be a pretty bad **** set up though.

That's what I thought, Dan. Plus, AFE is known for its air flow.

Well, I see that there is a lack of enthusiasm for my idea of a DIY AFE filter mod. Which I find suprising considering the price of the AFE stage II. What about us guys that do not live in dusty areas or travel dirt roads where the AFE filter would suit our needs just fine, but do not want to pay $450 for the kit. Be that as it may, I have one on the way and ironically I paid a dollar less ($73 delivered) than an AIS replacement filter ($74) would cost. Don't get me wrong AIS guys, you have the best filtering money can buy and it flows more air than the 6637. I'm just offering an alternative for the guys using the 6637 filter that don't mind the intake drone of an open intake. Even though this filter may flow more air than the AIS it will not filter as well as the AIS. With that being said, AFE does offer the Proguard 7 in the same size ($93)but it did not have the inverted filtering top.

The filter I got was the closest size I could find to the 6637. Here are some side-by-side measurements of the AFE filter and the 6637.
AFE intake inlet size: 4.5 inches
6637 intake inlet size: 4.0 inches
AFE filter length: 9 inches
6637 filter length: 11 inches
AFE filter base diamater: 8.5 inches
6637 filter base diamater: 8.5 inches
AFE filter top diamater: 7.0 inches
6637 filter top diamater: 8.5 inches
AFE inverted top filter diamater: 5 inches
6637 has no inverted filter top.

Now, I did speak to a guy with AFE and he assured me that the depth of the pleats on this universal filter are identical to the ones on the Stage II filters. He also told me that the actual Stage II filter that comes in the kit has a 5.5 inch intake inlet which improves flow. I'll post pics when the filter arrives.

Mark, that's great. Wow guys, I did'nt know that this would turn out this way. But, I do want you to know there are several different filters that are available. Specifically, the intake flange diamater, the one I ordered has the 4.5 inch ID which I will have to reduce to my 4.0 inch intake tube. There is a 4.0 inch ID intake flange filter available but the size of the filter is smaller, but will make adapting it to your 4.0 inch intake tube easier. The filter size for this one is:

AFE intake inlet size: 4.0 inches
AFE filter length: 8 inches
AFE filter base diamater: 8.0 inches
AFE filter top diamater: 7.0 inches
AFE inverted top filter diamater: 5 inches

With that said, wheather you get the 4.5 or the 4.0 inlet flange filters, I saw three part numbers of each size.
1st part number was for a non-proguard 7 filter with a solid black urethane top.
2nd part number was for a non-proguard 7 filter with an inverted filter top.
3rd part number was for a Proguard 7 filter with a solid black urethane top.

I just want to make sure you guys make an informed decision on which filter you may or may not want.

Well, I just found out that my filter is on back-order. Two to three week wait.
