Thanks Penn Dick, but after seeing the pic I am even more convinced that there would be increased vibration thus requiring a bigger counter balance. And I would guess the more counter balance the less HP produced to the rear wheels. I am so confused. Why would anybody want to use this? Jag

One Fireing/cam grind setup will will produce lots of torque, another very high RPM's. A Racer will do anything for the Win.

With the Flat crank that puts journals 1/4 and 2/3 180 apart. That is the only configuration that i've ever seen or coul imagine.

With that, pistons 1 - 5 - 4 - 8 are at TDC while 2 - 6 - 3 - 7 are BDC

Dick
Not exactly true: 1 & 4 will be at TDC at the same time, 90 degrees later 5 & 8 will be, 180 degrees later 2 & 3, 270 degrees later 6 & 7. You neglected the 90 degrees between banks.

I have received a magazine article from a 1950s issue of Drag News that explains how this crank works.

The author says, ". . . it is in effect two four cylinder engines working in unison but firing alternately." The entire article can be viewed at http://www.old-fords.com/flatcrank%202.htm.

I would still like to talk to people who have run this crank.

I think the idea of this crank being part of an air compressor modification is not true, and unimportant.
