223 exhaust gas control valve spring

Here's another one for you -

The thermostatic spring on my 223 that opens and closes the exhaust gas control valve has rusted away! Where on earth can I find a replacement spring???!!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I need education. What is the exhaust gas control valve and where is it located and what does it look like? Also, what year is yours?

223 exhaust gas control valve spring

chickenmanq,

I have a 1964 223 six. The exhaust gas control valve is a butterfly type valve that is located in the exhaust manifold right under where the carb mounts to the intake manifold - the exhaust and intake manifolds are bolted together at this point as well - it's all one big assembly. The valve is opened and closed by a thermostatic spring that is visible on the outside of the exhaust manifold on the forward facing side of the manifold - it looks like a spring coiled around itself - it's a lot like the main spring to a clock! On the cab facing side is a counterweight which helps the spring open and close the valve. As you might guess, the thermostatic spring is temperature sensitive - When your engine is cold the spring retains the valve in the closed position allowing exhaust gases: ie heat, to flow up to the intake manifold to help heat things for proper fuel vaporization. Once the engine reaches proper running temp. the spring warms up and opens the valve thus redirecting the exhaust gasses away from the intake and out through the exhaust system. I believe that on the 292, this valve is located in the heat riser. I hope this helps.

Hmmmmm, I was wondering if that was what I was thinking about. Add a spring to my list, although I don't see where it connects. I was just going to take out that valve when I got a new exhaust system, but right now it just flops around. What did the thermostatic spring look like? I can get all sorts of springs at the local hardware store.

Hi. My name is Jonathan and I'm new to these boards. I just bought a '64 223 six. I would be greatly interested to hear how yours is going......particularly how your exhaust valve is coming along. Its a little further down on my list, but I'm gonna be doing the same thing in a couple of months.

Paulmal: I might be able to help you with that spring. I am going to replace my heat riser valve sometime this summer with a NOS I got on E-Bay. Now, my old one works just fine, but it rattles like the engine is pinging and bothers my wife. If you want to pay the shipping, you can have it. However, mine is for a '66 352, but perhaps you can use the spring?

I took my valve out about 2 years ago and just filled the holes with epoxy putty. It was an easy fix and i have not had any problems since no leaking or cracking.

PaulMal: I gotta pull it first. If I get to take some vacation time off, I'll pull it and send it to you. Hopefully in June, but I may have to wait until July. (Between now and August, I'm going to Seattle, Dallas, Belguim, Kuwait and the armpit of the univrse, the WA DC area.) You might even be able to put it right on as is, but I doubt it. Unless you live way up North, you probably don't need it until winter, so I assume there is no hurry for it? Or is the truck down, waiting on this fix?
Do me a favor, and send me a reminder e-mail, would you? I forget things quite easily, and I don't want to to let you down.

Whatever it costs to ship it is good enough for me.

E-mail is banjopicker66(No Email Addresses In Posts!).
