'tis how I fixed it too. Took a 1/32 bit and drilled a hole in the side of the filler neck, just in from the opening. The cap covers the hole so you can't see it, but is in a place where it won't allow rain water (or other contaminates) in, or gasoline out (unless there's a major overflow or something). The hole doesn't need to be big. The smaller the better.
Also--this just hit me, and may be a long shot, but I HAVE seen it before. If there was no fuel in the lines for months after you plumbed them, it is possible, that some six legged or eight legged freaks made a home within your lines, which would cause problems, and yes, I really have seen this before.
