Hello, new to the forum. Needing info on restoring a 1950 f2 ford pickup. Trying to fix the instrument panel cluster. Trying to figure out the wiring for it. Can't seem to find a diagram on the Internet and I ain't no wiring genius. Previous owner tried to hook up individual gauges, but nothing is hooked up right now. It is a wiring nightmare to say the least. HELP !!!!!

Welcome to the both of you to the Forum. First off have you just bought new wiring harnesses, or are you trying to repair the old?
If its the first usually a wireing diagram comes with the harness. The latter you need a shop manual that will guide you through this proceedure.

You can buy the shop manual that covers 48-51 with the 52 supplement added. Even though this is a reprint of the original it is a real good book, and gives a lot of value for the cost.

It covers everything that you want to find out and along with the how to do it. Things like Torque Values, Wireing and so on. Another good book to get along with this is the Chassis book, this gives exploded views of the parts to better give you an idea of how all goes together.

Again guys I strongly suggest you start with these 2 books they are well worth the money, and could save your trucks from an electrical fire. Believe me for what its worth no-one needs that.

I strongly agree with everyone, the manual has helped me a thousand times. I keep a beat up copy in my truck and a nice clean copy in the house.

I'd like to have these manuals you're talking about. I rewired my truck myself, and went with Dolphin guages. My original guages had been disconnected (from the PO installing the 302), except for the speedo which was failing.

Nonetheless, it'd be nice to have those manuals. Where do you find them?

Check the store area here, they may list them. If not, Look on Ebay under 49 Ford as your topic. They cover 49-51 and also a suppliment listed for 52. THey are on Ebay all the time.

While wiring my '49 panel tonight I found an omission in the Ford shop manual wiring diagram.



The wiring diagram on the back page does not include the wires to the ignition switch. I searched through the entire manual and could not find a reference for the ignition switch wiring. I was running wires to the circuit breakers using the old wiring as a guide. The circuit breakers had three wires (Yellow) going to it but the manual's diagram only had two wires, one going to voltage regulator and one passing through the amp meter and going to the starter solenoid. It didn't show the yellow wire going to the ignition switch. It doesn't have the ignition switch at all.



I looked at the drawing from the VanPelt site and found the wiring for the switch there.



The VanPelt drawing is a lot better than the one in the manual, print a copy and stick it in your manual for future reference. I just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention, it can save a lot of frustration . It's still a good idea to get the manual, it has a great deal of very valuable information.

 

check your local library if there older library may still have a few of the motors manuals on the shelf of micro fish. i found one about 4 years ago covering 48 to 52 in the denver library

 

I was confused too about the manual not having the wiring diagram for 1949 ignition switch. Thanks van Pelt and FTE!!!

hello everyone, i'm working on a 66 f100 and have no power on the fuse going to the insterment panel now every thing is not working brakes turn signal and so any advice???

Check your ground to be sure it is good.

You might also want to start a new thread with your question as you will most likely get more attention and answers.

Just in case the drawings are a little bit much to read, I can make the instrument wiring very easy for you.

There is a power wire that comes of the outbound side of the 15 amp circuit breaker (sugar cube size thingy which is mounted with the 30 amp breaker on the instrument panel) and goes to one post on the back of the temperature gauge. Then there is a jumper wire or metal shunt that goes from that post on the temp gauge to the same posts on both the oil pressure then on to the gas gauge. This is power in to the gauges.

Then from the other post on each guage, a wire goes out the the appropriate sending unit which after some magic adjustment, provides the ground.

The wire for the amp guage comes from the "Batt" side of that same 15 amp curcuit breaker, runs through the loop on the back of the amp guage, then on to the "Batt" terminal of the starter solenoid - same post the negative side of the battery is connected to (in a 6 volt positive ground truck).

 

high guys new to the forum and i hope i can get some help . i have a 1962 ford econoline with a six cyl 170 cid first i like to know if i can buy a new wiring harness for the lights and turn signals and all the other stuff i seen some that you can buy for front rear and eng pluss batt. or should i just buy a painless kit i can not find a fuse box if any.next the carburetor is a 1908 model and have some parts missing on it i looked on ebay no luck any one know where i gould get one and the same for the wiring. this econoline is a pu allso does any one know if i can get a gas tank thanks for any info impala66

Type a new thread in the 1961/67 Econoline forum. You won't get much info here, as this is the 1948/60 truck forum.

I may be able to find some of these parts, but I'm not typing the info in this forum.
