What cast numbers are good solid heads- good flowing with smaller chambers.... Early 70s mid 70s?

I thought they were all the same pretty much on the 351W. They used the same heads on 2v and 4v motors, unlike the Cleveland. Only way to go as far as I know is aftermarket for decent flowing and bigger valved 351W heads. There's a sticky in this section https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...6-10-06-a.html

I just got my new rebuilt 351W today. What's good to plug up those A.I.R. holes in the back of the head? Are they standard bolt threads? Thought I'd ask in this related thread instead of starting a new one.

Mild performance-looking mainly for a torquer- mud truck. My buddies have an array of windsor-302 heads/blocks etc so i was looking for a set of numbers to shoot for....

According to the chart they're all big chambered and tiny valved.

According to HPBooks "Ford Windsor Small Block Performance", here are the flow numbers for the E7TE stock, E7 Ported, Edelbrock Performer and GT40P heads..

-Lift--------Intake CFM ---------Exhaust CFM
.100 -------52/79/72/64---------39/70/57/52
.200------- 95/131/131/114-----74/119/105/98
.300------- 131/173/185/166----95/148/131/128
.400------- 141/186/214/199----103/154/156/137
.500------- 154/193/223/212----106/157/168/134

These E7 ported heads were fitted with 1.90/1.60 valves which compare well with the other heads. Porting included removing the air injection hump in the exhaust port, smoothing the bowl area behind the exhaust valve and blending it in with the roof, and opening the port mouth to 1.312" x 1.156". The intake is opened to 1.937" x 1.125", the wall around the pushrod hole is smoothed, and the bowl area is smoothed and blended with the port floor.

As you can see there is performance potential in the E7 heads, though both the GT40P and Edelbrock heads are true bolt-on improvements over stock. I suspect by the time you add the cost of upgrading the valves in the E7 heads you could almost have a set of GT40P cast iron heads.

I can spend the money that needs spent- that's no problem. The engine may just not get put back together as soon as I'd like- I'm a working man too Well let me tell you what I had in mind....Holley truck avenger, edelbrock perf rpm, comp cams 268 or 270 grind, truck will have headers dumping into about 5' of 3" exhaust which dumps in to 5" stacks. looking for a middle to high (not mor than 5500 or 6000) rpm truck motor for a mud bogger.....torque will be most important. Im just not that familiar with windsors never built one, but this truck is setup for one. I sold the big block truck and all the stuff that went with it except for my 76 im restoring.

If they are 351 heads they will have a 60cc combustion chamber, 1.84/1.54 valves, no internal air injection, and extra intake manifold bolt holes that don't appear on later heads, so it won't match EFI intakes.
The best stock head for either windsor engine is the GT40P. It has bigger valves than any of the predecessors and is compatable with EFI systems.

How about World Products Windsor Jr's or Sr's? Decent priced cast iron heads. The Gt40's might be a little cheaper though.

The stock heads are going to be the main limiting factor for making more power on a 351W. They're quite possibly some of the poorest heads for trying to make power ever made on a v8. The Performer RPM you want and even worked stock heads wouldn't be a good combo I think.

For the time and money it would be a lot better to get some Gt40's or WP heads and slap them on, especially using a 4bbl. I stuck with stock heads because I'm sticking with the 2bbl.

You get what you pay for when it comes to cylinder heads. Out of the box, it's hard to beat a set of AFR's or Trick Flows. The money spent on machining a set of E7's to allow a 351 to breath decently is will put you in the price range of a set ot Performer RPM's.
If you want to stick with an iron head, and this is a stock/mild build, then a set of GT40's will work well for the money (used).

Maybe try to find some GT-40X, AFR, or TF heads....?

A set of AFR165s or 185s would be sweeet...

Anybody have the size/TPI of the plug or bolt in the back of these E5's? I can't find anything that will fit in the smog holes.
