Too many miles on 7.3?

I'm looking at getting an X and am interested in getting a diesel. Most likely it will be a 7.3 as that's all my budget will permit. I know diesels can run for many, many miles. I'm just curious as to how many miles is too many before I should shy away from it. I've located a 2001 online that has 88,000 on it. What do you guys think?

Oh! Another question unrelated to miles.... did the Xs ever come with sunroofs?

88,000 miles is low miles. some 2001's had transmission problems so get the transmission checked but the engine is no problem.

Anything under 100,000 is really just getting broken in good.

No. The rear air ducts are in the roof.

I wouldnt buy any vehicle with over 100,000 miles. My experience with the 7.3L is that after 160,000 miles your are in for trouble. Yeah the engine will run for ever but the tranny wont, the lift pump wont, the high pressure seals wont, the glow plugs wont. It just beomes one thing after another.

I wouldn't buy anything over 100,000 anyway. Diesel or not.

Back to the transmission...what type of problems does it have?

Hello Gentlemen
My X has 81.000 miles on it now and it's pretty much like new still. I just changed the ball joints, which had got loose propably due to bigger tires, but no other failures so far. I am expecting to use this work truck still couple of more years.

Guess I really messed up...
I bought my F250 / 7.3 with 165,000 miles on it & now have 369,000+ miles. I have replaced the Alt., water pump, & the vacume pump but I figure that is just normal maint. for something with more then a 1/4 of a million miles on it.

This is what I would expect. My neighbor just had his vehicle hauled off to the scrap yard. It was only gas v6 origional motor tranny, with only 465,000 miles. The engine tranny were still good, but the diff was out as well as steering / a./c and other accy's.

For the 7.3 I would expect it to run a long time. Mine has 125,000 miles, almost looks new, runs great and I expect to run a long time.

Ok,, guess I do need to check the front hubs. Jim

In my 2001 4R100, Ford used a Mechanical Diode which has failed in my truck from what I was told. What is this and what has Factory Tech done to eliminate it happening again?
The 2001 Models built for August 2000 to March 2001 are the ones with a mechanical diode, all other models have a 34 element sprag from the factory. All Monster Boxes, irregardless of year are built with the 45 element sprag assembly. A mechanical diode is one form of a one way clutch. When the E4OD came out in 1989, it had a sprag one way clutch on the top of the direct drum, and it worked great for 12 years. So Ford in 2001 changed it to the mechanical diode, which didn't work great and after literally 8 days, they realized it was not going to work. The only problem was that all the tooling for the original sprag was destroyed already and it took Ford 6 months to get new machines to go back to the way that they always were. The units built during those 6 months are the diode units. The diode has a different clutch plate pattern, different direct drum and an integral race. To replace one with a sprag, you need to replace all these parts. No Monster Box has ever been built with a mechanical diode.

Holy odometer, Batman! If I find one, I hope I'm that fortunate.

My 91 full-size Bronco with 167,000 miles has an E4OD in it. I can only imagine that they've gotten better since then. What are the odds that this issue has been taken care of before I buy it? What is a Monster Box?

Damn! Ford should use you in a commercial!

I'll have to admit I did buy my Bronco with over 100,000 miles on it and it's been a great truck.
