460 Aod??

I am wanting to put a 4spd auto in place of my C6. I have a 460 in a 1978 F100 (2wd). I want it to be as painless as possible. I have a large number of salvage yards to get used trannies from. I am not sure what 4spd autos came behind the 460. I dont want to mess with the wiring for any electronics. Did the AOD come with the 460? I have to do a rebuild on my C6 anyway and would rather put a 4spd auto in. I realize I will have to deal with the driveshaft and am planning on ordering a higher stall speed converter as well.

You're out of luck. The E4OD was the only four speed auto ever bolted to the 460. It requires electronics to work.

If you really want an AOD, you'll need an adaptor. The AOD was never bolted to the 460. And then you'll need an expensive rebuild, because a 460 will tear up a stock AOD VERY quickly.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if there is a wiring kit available to make the EAOD work?

It's referd to as E4OD not EAOD. The E4 trans does not have a very good reputation. In 94 or I think it was that year ford upgraded the E4 trans. Most rebuilds are done with the upgrades. A good rebuild will run you well over $2K. I have seen many post where people advise that one install a remote trans filter which will help provide a longer life to E4 trans. I have added remote filters to the tow trucks at the shop. Figured it can't hurt.

If you don't mind a manual trans then the ZF would be the cheapest way to go but you will have to modify you clutch pedal for a hyd set up.

Thanks, I had heard the E4OD was as strong as the C6. I am not planning on spending $2k on this. I will run one of my C6's. I was hoping to get the overdrive for my occassional trips to Tampa. The savings in fuel would not justify a $2k upgrade. Has anyone heard much about the TCI Streetfighter C6's?
