28 yr old C6

I do have a '97 F250HD, but I'm looking for some help on my old Mercury.

I've got a 1978 Marquis with a 460 4bbl and a C6. The car has 103,000 miles on it now.

I started driving it at age 16, and the odometer only showed 37,000 then! In my younger years, I did every knuckle-head thing a kid could do to it.

I've brake-torqued it, done long smokey burn-outs, trashed a bunch of motor mounts, and even thrashed the 9" rear... ahh, the things we do as kids!

The car leads a much easier life now, and I really appreciate how good it's been to me. Amazingly, the original C6 still gets it down the road.

But... it's slow to engage Drive when first started. Even full-throttle 1-2 shifts are sleepy... almost slippery.

Since it is almost truck parts, can any of you tell me what a proper rebuild would include on a 28 year old tranny that's done it all? I'd just like it to perform like new again... if that's a few bucks more than cutting corners I'm fine with it... I'll have the car forever and I just want to make it right again.

Thanks much!

Sounds like the forward clutches are going out. If you rebuild, flush your lines and cooler out real good, you don't want all that crap in there getting into your new rebuild.

mark... thanks for your thoughts!

How about everybody else? What if we pretend the old C6 is in a 2wd truck with a 460... then would you help me?

are you asking for step by step, or what to have the tranny shop do?

I'm asking what should the tranny shop do.

I don't want to do the work myself, but I want to make sure that I'm getting a complete job the first time so I don't have to think about the tranny for another 28 years.

Sorry I wasn't clearer.

well, a total rebuild on a C6 isnt to complicated. Just ask for a stock rebuild with oem parts.
