I know this isn't a physical check of the engine, but if you have the 'L' in the VIN and not a '5,' then Ford basically claims to have put a 2V gas only engine in your Expy.
The web has pics of the 2v engine out of trucks, which should be nearly identical to your Expy the 4.6s and 5.4s look very much alike so you can use 4.6s as well. The 3v heads do use a different shaped head and valve cover...

Scalloped? My valve covers aren't scalloped, but they have the lateral lines along them, if that's what you mean... that varies year to year. I have a pic of an '03 2V 5.4 minus the throttle body cover. The valve covers are smooth.

The 8th digit of your VIN is the engine code. No other digit matters when it comes to the engine. 'L' for the 2v, '5' for the 3v. If your Expy has a '5L' in that order then it's not a 2004, but an '05 built at the Wayne, MI plant. The only place that a 5 and L could be found next to each other on an Expy is the year code (10th digit) and assembly plant code (11th digit).
