Thumbs down shifting poorly. hypertech?

I have an 03 f250 4x4 with an automatic. I installed a hypertech programmer about a month ago and the truck just doesnt shift the same. In level 1,2 and 3 it seems to hang up in third gear. At full throttle it shifts great but when I accelerate normally(which is 95% of the time) it is very lazy or hangs up. I switched it back to stock and it runs through all the gears nicely. I plan a fluid and filter change within the next couple of weeks will this help? Or is a better tuner needed. I love the extra power but is this going to prematurly kill my tranny? thanks for any advice

mscott,

Try to install level three again. This time when it asks if you have a shift package, push N so it will program your trans. See if this helps...post results.

The programmer has a few options. Automatic yes/no and does it have an aftermarket shift kit yes/no. My truck doesnt have a shift kit so i said no. i guess to compensate for the extra power. It has had the problem since I installed it. Yesterday i was messing around and programmed it as if i had a shift kit, it was a little better but not much. I dont see what is causing it. Stock tuning it is fine but any other level it does the lazy shifting. I am very easy on the truck. I only use it to tow a couple times a month and thats only a 16ft car trailer and jeep. Is this a common problem with aftermarket tuners?

I use the Banks PDA w/six gun for tuning. When set at stock setting it shifts just like stock as it should. As I increase the power (up to level 7) the Computer incrementely modifys the way the transmission shifts. There are about six or so parameters that I can change. It shifts slower and softer with increased power. They say it is set like this from the factory to avoid trans issues and liability issues. I am able to modify these parameters, but when adding 50% more hp and torque, it may be best to just leave it how Banks sets it. Hypertech may do similar soft shift modifications, it wouldn't suprise me. They do have a sequence to "teach" the transmission to learn to shift with the increased power (per the setup for my tuner). They tell you to start in setting one from a dead stop and floor it up to sixty mph and then come to a dead stop. Do that three times in each setting and that is supposed to "gradually" increase shifting performance. Maybe trying that in your Hypertech's single setting will help. With all the power these trucks have, shifting like a turbo 350 with a shiftkit may not be could...but Im sure it would be fun scratching gears in a big Klacker.... Good luck. ~Brad

04' f250 PSD with the Hypertech and mine shifts much better with the tuner installed. I have 4 friends that have the same setup and no problems at all. Have you had the truck reflashed lately? After a reflash, the tuner may not work properly. Otherwise, I think it's your tranny and not the tuner.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yesterday I called Hypertech to see if there was any way to relearn the tranny after its programmed like the Banks system does. They said no just to drive it normally for a few days. So out of frustration I put it back to stock tuning. Shifts perfect. One thing that has came to mind is that my truck was reflashed when it was new for the 30-20-12 tsb. When I got the programmer it wouldnt work because it couldnt read my VIN number because it had been reflashed. I sent it back and they recalibrated the programmer to work. Could there be a glich in there recalibration? Is the SCT strategy better than the Hypertech? I hear it referenced a lot more. Thanks

Sct Is Awesome Call Ted Or Eric At Innivative Diesel Their Tranny Tunes Along With Their Street, Tow , Or Extreme Tune Is Awesome Better Than My Edge A2 Everthought Of Being, They Can Turn Off The Egr, Lock Up The Torque Converter In 3,4, & 5 And Adda Toe Brake In The Tow Ptogram I Have Been Through A Few Tuners And Modules And I Have To Say The Sct From Innovative Diesel Is The Best

mscott2154...I'm not familar with HyperTech operations, but does it give you the ability to Read the engine code or Strategy? If so this will be very important to know. Your engine strategy is located under the battery box on the drivers side, but if it's been reflashed it's not the same.

Unfortunately there is not a current working tune with the SCT, FlashPaq and probably HyperTech for the most recent flash. I know that SCT is working on it for their stock tuners and some custom tunes are able to work like the ones from InnovativeDiesel.

You can order the SCT Xcal2 from Innovative and when you receive the tuner you can go to your truck and read the strategy and call them back and let them know and they will email you the tunes. While you are on the phone you can tell them what options you want(EGR-off, Pilot Injection-On,JakeBrake)and you simply upload to the tuner and go upload to the truck.
