No, it's pretty rare for fans to unzip like that without a reason. This makes me wonder if your truck was in an accident somewhere along the road of life and they didn't replace a damaged fan. Make sure to inspect the radiator and the serp belt in the course of your repair.

And the water pump. Just did this one myself actually...went to replace the fan ended up doing the whole water pump, new pulley, new serp belt, new clutch and new fan. Funny what such a simple job can turn into. The pump was needed though.

Annnnyways. I agree with CB9M, they're durable unless something causes them to happen. Have you owned the truck since day 1? If you could get some pictures and post them on here that would be great.

Who did all the work, out of curiosity?

Hmm that was odd...replied and it didn't work. Oh well.

I took it to our mechanic's shop when I couldn't get the fan off. He got the fan off, them showed me where the water pump had been weeping, ordered a new water pump, and I did that.

You put the water pump on, or your mechanic Zach?

Out of curiosity, how come ya didn't just climb in there at home and go for it? Water pumps, belts and all that are pretty easy . It's one of those deals where you look at how it's assembled and proceed to simpy R&R the part(s).

*I remember years ago having a water pump go out on a Sunday evening. I could get the part but mechanics like their days off like everyone else. I bought the needed tools as well as the pump and did the work on the side of a state road.

I had to replace the fan on my '91 (4.0L) after I discovered that the plastic center hub had a number of cracks. I seem to remember that it was held on by some huge size nuts. I ended up making a home-made wrench to get it off.

I couldn't get the fan off...the "tool" that Autozone rents wouldn't work...kept almost stripping the bolt. I called our mechanic to ask if he had another way I should know about that would be easier, and he said just bring it out here and you can use my shop, so I did. He ordered the water pump after noticing it was weeping, so it got done too. Looks like a sore thumb, bright metal water pump on a old greasy engine lol.

With the weeping issue, wasn't there a noticeable loss of coolant over time? I'm also curious as to why the fan clutch and the pulley (can be cleaned) were bad (I've never heard of this pulley ever going bad in 15+ years of being around the 4.0). Kinda funny (ie, suspect to say it another way) that all these things "croaked" all at once....................

I hadn't really noticed a huge loss of coolant, but it was losing some over time, I kept just hoping it was the air getting out of the system from me doing the thermostats, but after a week or so it's pretty obvious all the air is out and something else is causing the leak.

The fan clutch I replaced because I got a deal on a new one. The pulley was re-used. (Can a pulley even go bad?)
