Dual quads on 390 F-100

Several years ago, I acquired a 1968 F-100 from my Dad that has been in the family almost since new. I have slowly been modifying the truck to my own idea of a truck.

The first mod was done while Dad still owned the truck; the original 360 gave up, and we replaced it with a 390 from a 1966 passenger, and added Mustang GT heads and a Carter AFB 4 barrel.

The first mod I did after acquiring the truck was to install a truck 4-speed instead of the original dogmatic. What a difference. Lots more power, MPG jumped from 15 to 17; lower octane fuel could be used.

The latest mod was the addition of dual quads (first gear is now virtually useless if the truck is not loaded)!

For those who might have an interest:

I started with an Offenhauser aftermarket intake and 4 Carter AFB carburetors; (2) 4759 Competition series manual choke 625 CFM carbs, and (2) 430 Lincoln donors.

Unfortunately, the aftermarket Carters are calibrated for bowtie engines. This calibration does not work well on Ford engines.

The 4759's were modified as follows: idle tubes were increased by 0.002; metering rods and auxiliary air valves were migrated directed from the Lincolns, new jets and vacuum springs for Lincoln were used. The throttle shafts were removed, and modified to use the Lincoln (Ford) arm instead of the universal bowtie arm.

Carburetors were installed as 2 primary units, rather than a primary carb and a secondary carb; that is, both carbs work simultaneously at all RPM's. After fabricating custom fuel lines and linkage, a reproduction Ford oval air cleaner was modified to work (necessary to raise the aircleaner to clear the distributor). The engine pulls strong in low, second, and third from idle; and from 1000 RPM in high.

Very pleased with the installation.

Now if I just knew sometihing about air conditioning.....

Bill - thanks, I am quite aware of the Holleys, but only have one fire extinguisher mounted on the truck . No offense, but we don't do Holleys in our shop. To each their opinion.
