authoritative update on emissions testing
I've heard and read some conflicting reports on how emissions testing is handled on older vehicles in NC. I have an authoritative answer from NC DOT.
So basically put the smog belt back on when you go in for inspection, and you better have something that externally resembles a catalytic converter on the tail end of your Y-pipe.
We apologize for the confusion. Tail pipe testing ended in North Carolina on December 31st 2005 and our web page hasn’t been updated yet. The only emissions testing currently conducted in this state is OBD II testing and this is conducted on 1996 and newer vehicles only. Your vehicle requires a safety inspection only but will have to pass a visual inspection of all required emissions components. We trust this information was useful. If we can be of further assistance, please advise.
