1964 F100 3 spd conversion to 4 speed from 490ci BB. Will it work?
I am having a slight problem with my conversion. I have a 1964 F100 with a 6 cylinder engin. All the info. I find about the trucks is that they did not start installing the 300ci motors until 1965, but all parts that I buy have to be for a 300 in order to fit. My 1st ? is how do I tell if I have a 300 in my truck? 2nd, I pulled a 4 speed tranny out of another truck, same year, and am trying to bolt it to my 300 (or so I think it is a 300). I have already noticed that the bell housing is different. So, I decided to use the bell housing from my 3 speed and bolt the transmission and tail housing to it. Everything seems to fit great except for 1 thing. Inside the bell housing there is a pivot point for the clutch fork that is BOLTED onto the bell housing. The nuts that hold it on are on the outside of the bell housing and are getting in the way of where the wider transmission needs to come in contact with the bell housing. I looked at the bell housing that originally came from the 4 speed and it looks like it is not bolted on but rather pressed on or manufactured onto the bell housing. If I have the piece welded onto the bell housing and remove the mounting nuts & bolts, will this be the only thing I will need to do for this conversion or is welding even going to work in this case? I currently have the truck apart and temporarily going to have the 3 speed rebuilt and put it back in. I still want to go to the 4 speed though and am open for any knowledge and suggestions that I can get. Pleast email me at taaraujo@sbcglobal.net with any information that you might have. Thank you in advance for your help.

Aaron, I hope I get this right, the 240/300 has the intake on the passenger side, 223/? series has it on the drivers side. That is the easiest way to tell. Correctly stated theh 240/300 came out in 65 and has the side mount. Your 64 should have a front rear mount.

1 thing I forgot to mention is that the pink on the truck states that it is a '64, but it has a 300 in it. I bought this truck from the original owner who has had the motor rebuilt 1 time and says that it is the factory motor. I wonder if it was in late 1964 and was released with the 300 in it because it was so close to '65?

ford may have the answer for you! look closely at the two bolts and see if the holes on the trans side are actually counter sunk. most fords had the pivot riveted in and the holes have a taper seat so it would be flush. a replacement pivot comes with two special bolts to replace the rivets. these bolts will fit into the recess and make the bellhousing flat for you bigger trans. the nuts end up on teh inside of teh bellhousing where there is a lot of room. i don't know about early stuff but this is true of 65 and newer. and don't weld the bracket on as it is steel and the bellhousing is cast iron and the bellhousing will probably crack if you try. hope this helps, hawkrod

I really appreciate the help. I am going to remove the pivot point and check out the holes. If the holes are not tapered, would having a machine shop thread the holes work? Then I could use shorter bolts that would end just flush with the bell housing. Screwing them in from the inside.
