It is possable to run a gas or diesel engine with smoke. You need a smoke source going into the intake. The gas engine may need to run very lean and the diesel may need to burn a small amount of fuel to get the combustion started. I don't know the specifics of how to do it. There was a book detailing how the British researched and used it extensively durring world war II for generators.

About 30 years ago I met an old guy in WALLA WALLA WA that had a gasifier mounted on the back of an old ww2 jeep. It would take him about 30min to fire it up, then he would drive all over town for HOURS!! He was using GRASS CLIPPINGS!!! He helped me build one that I used to run a generator for elk camp, worked great! wonder whatever happened to it?? FABMANDELUX

wow, that is amazeing. i would love to try makeing one of those some day. does the fact that your burning smoke have any negetive effect on the piston rings, cylinder walls, spark plugs and valves? how does the throttle work, and how do you get the air/fuel mixture to be right on without some kind of measureing system? i checked out the links, the first one seems toast and the 2nd one has a little diagram of how one works, do you have any sources for a detailed instruction on how to fabricate one?
