Hello everyone,

I'm moving to Wasilla July 30 and am wondering if there is any need to invest in an engine heater for the winter months in that part of the state. I know it isn't as cold as the interior, but always good to know.

It's nice to have. Have a block heater on my Yukon and about to put one on my Ford thought it did well in the winter months for being a diesel.

 

You will appreicate it during a cold snap. Heck I have one down here and it's the tropics compared to the MatSu winter temps. Anything below 20 and I plug it in (On a timer)..

Ah heated seats. Now only if they came with a vib mode.

 

I just put one on my truck today... it was real easy if you are mechanically inclined at all. I have a post on it in the heating and cooling section if ya wanna take a look. The heater itself was 25 bucks at at NAPA. Thought I'd have to hammer it in but you just clean around the hole and push it in, as your holding it tighten the screw and it will pull itself sealed. Piece of Cake! Add coolant until it stays by the cool line, I started my truck after adding a lot and then topped a little off. Make sure to keep the cap off when you start it because once its hot and pressurized you CANNOT take the cap off unless you want to get burned. Good luck!!! schmidty

 

I live in Wasilla and it frequently gets could enough here that if I don't plug in my diesel (2000 f-350) it just plain and simple will not start easily, or won't start at all if it has been sitting for longer than about 15 hours. However, it does do ok without it being plugged in if the temperature is above 5 degrees. It will even fire up sometimes when it is much colder, but it is not worth the chance that it won't start. Anyone that has lived here for awhile knows that below 5 degrees is pretty darn common in the cold winter months of December, January, February, and even frequently in March and November. If it is a gasser it should start even to -30 if it has a good battery and is in decent tune. All my gasser always do start when it is that cold. NOTE: it does get -30 here for a few days (don't worry it is just a few days) every year. It is more likely for it to happen, than for it to NOT happen.

 

I save a lot of fuel by plugging in my truck, I think its worth it

Up north you might want a battery blanket too
