Red face code p0603 problem

My 95 ford diesel won't idle at all. I checked it with my code reader. The only code it shows is a p0603. I have cleared it off three times. When I start my truck back up and run it a few minutes. I check it and the same code appears. All my friends says to replace the pcm it's bad. Are they a way to check it.

Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts paulgc.

The KAM error code is very common. Anything that disrupts battery power will set the 603 code. It is not a good indication that your PCM is bad.

Is it just an idle problem? I.e....can you keep it running above idle or will it not start at all?

cookie 88. The truck will start but won't idle. Sometimes you can keep the rpm up around 3000 and it will smooth out the a minute or two. It don't smoke know more the it would when it was running good. Now the truck won't pull the hill at my house.

The good news is the PCM is most likely fine.

When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? How about the oil? Air filter?.......

I just changed the fuel filter when this started. The air filter is k&n it is not do yet to be cleaned and reoiled. The oil was changed about 1000 miles ago.

How about the fuel pressure, have you checked that? Sounds like it could be a pump problem.

When I check the fuel pump what should the pressure be. My book don't tell what the pressure gauge should say. On a 95 ford diesel 7.3.

fuel pressure should be 40-60 mine after shimming runs 75psi. also do you ahve a chip installed. p0603 (or is it 605) is normal if you have a chip installed

I believe I find my problem. My alternator is only putting out 12 volts. What should it be putting out for a diesel.

About 13.5 when it's running. Same as any other 12v vehicle.

Have you had a chance to check the fuel pressure?

make sure you are checking your alternator output atleast 2 minutes after starting but not before since the computer does not command the alt. to charge a short time after starting. you will see you volt guage jump up once the alt starts charging. some say this is the glow plugs but its no. cause the glowplug are timed via oil and air temp and the alt won't start charging for the same exact time everytime. so in short if youa re checking alt ouput right after starting it won't be correct.

My alternator is putting out 13.5 now. The truck will start but every light on the instrument panel is staying on. Help !P.S. I have not tested the fill pressure yet but I will.

does your truck have a chip on it?
if so take it off.

driver side kick panel under and infront of the parking brake pedal. thats where the somputer is and a chip would be stuck into the back of it facing the driver.
