Painting raised letters

I am restoring a 1970 F100 and am working on the interior. There are raised letters on the vents and temperature controls and I was wondering if anyone had any tricks for painting these letters?

Painting raised letters

You need to be careful in the type of paint you use. The raised letters you describe are also lighted in the same circut as the dash and instrument lights. If you paint them with the wrong paint or too heavy, they will not glow at night. Some paints, even white, have ultra fine particles of metal in them and are not transparent. They are painted white at the factory; possibly with the same type of paint used to frost outdoor Christmas lights? I don't know. Try it on a small spot first (the tiny dots on the fan speed control) before painting all the letters. Let the paint dry and see if they still light up in the dark when you turn your headlights on.Find out if the plastic pieces can be removed from the bezel---they appear to me to be seperate parts, but I could be wrong. Then dampen a piece of paper with the paint on a flat surface and stamp the plastic pieces on the wet paper. Only the highest flats of the letters will get the paint. If you can not remove the lettered pieces from the bezel, then I guess you will have to find a very small brush and a very steady hand.Good Luck!

Painting raised letters

Thanks for the information. It seems that I was going to go about it the wrong way. I appreciate your help and will try what you suggested.

Thanks again

What about painting chrome trim pieces such as a "Custome Cab" badge thats on the side of the cab. It has red paint on the indsied portion. What kind of paint would work and stick to the chrome and then actually hold up to sun and weather?

well i used auto paint, with a little extra hardner. then i rubed the emblem against a piece of 400 wet/dry paper on a really flat surface until all unwanted paint was gone
let the emblem dry for a couple of days ,though
this worked for me

Darkwolf, if the emblem is a '70 then I believe the paint should be black, with a C8??? part number.

Any good paint will work fine. I spray all of mine, they look mint. No primer either.

Actually, if the truck is an original 1970 model, it won't have the Custom Cab emblems. If it's a Styleside, the bedside near the rear will have the Custom, Sport Custom, Ranger, etc. designation. The Custom Cab emblem was discontinued after 1969.
