Best 460 for '71 F250 Camper Special
My current 360 just doesn't have the oomph when a fully loaded full sized camper is placed on it!
I would like to drop a 460 in it and I gather a C6 transmission is preferred.
My two questions are:
Is the 460 a compatible drop in for this truck?
Which year of the 460 would be most desirable?
Even here in California, this truck is smog check exempt, so limitations there.
Thanks,
Rod

You will have to get motor mount supports or "perches" from a ' 67-' 72 truck from a 429/460 application, your present 360 (FE) supports won't work, you will also have to get a C-6 from/with your 460, as your present C-6 or cruise-o-matic won't bolt to the 460, I personally would shoot for something around a ' 77 or ' 78 in a 460, ' 78s had the "big" motorcraft 4300 "spreadbore" 4 barrell, & the one I had in my ' 78 F150 really kicked butt in STOCK form.

There are no 460 applications until 73. Use the frame horns (mounts) from a 73 or newer and it will go in just fine. I used them from a 77 and headers from a 77 and everything fits fine, a little tight around the power steering box. I dented the header and had them ceramic coated to hold the heat back.

Why not just drop a high torque cam in the 360 along with a 4bbl intake. I think you would be suprised at what the difference would be.(power and cost)
460's are the kind of engine that sound cool to say you have one, but really suck in the real world unless you put alot of parts in it to make it work right. Even then you would be lucky to get 8mp/g on highway, empty. I had one in a 76 1/2 ton. My dad's 75 f-250 with a 390 would eat me off the line to top end, empty or full and he always went alot further on a tank of fuel.... but it sounded cool to say I had a 460 under the hood!
Just my 2 cents worth.

It will be cheaper to throw a 390 crank and rods in that 360 and make it a 390, thats all thats different between the two. You could also use a 427 crank and make a 410.
Rebuild it, throw in some 9:1 compression pistons, 390 cranks/rods, a good cam like the Crane 901 or 941, edelbrock performer rpm, 650 carb, headman headers and your at 325+ hp and 420+ lbs of torque with a good flat power band.
By the time you do all the conversion stuff for the 460, find another tranny, motor mounts, buy a 460 and rebuild it with the tranny you're going to be another grand more than working from what you've got. You'll have a bit more power (depending on build), but also be heavier with worse fuel mileage and a much bigger project to undertake, I.E. headache.
460/429's are a great motor, but a stout 390 will I'm sure handle anything you want to throw at it.
Search the FE forum, lots of info there.

I average 15mpg with a 460 C6 in a 4x4 crewcab with 35in mud terrains with a heavy foot, and eat up my dads and brothers 390's one with a C6 and other with a Np435 both 2wd's. Yes I have a few upgrades in the engine but nothing more than you would probably drop into a 360-390. I feel the conversion was a pain in the u know what but worth it(in my situation, and sick of the FE's) in your case I'd just opt to a stroked 390 with a few upgrades try http://www.flatlanderracing.com/ only because you already have the FE platform and save some stress. If your still interested in the 460 check out http://www.landlproducts.com/ to save time on a scavanger hunt and guesswork if you don't mind the pricey tag. There are cheaper ways to drop a 460 in you just have to do some reading in the forums,

Man, 15 mpg with that setup is freaking sweet, and rare from what I've been around.
We've had two lincolns, a 77 and a 78. Both 460's/C6's with 2.50 gears and the very BEST they ever did was 17 on the freeway with a tail wind. On average it was between 8-12 depending on how much in town or highway driving.
The '77 f250 4x4 Crew my dad used to have with a bone stock car 460, np435, got around 8mpg or less, but it had a REALLY heavy flat bed, and always full of tools/fuel and/or towing something (Case 580C backhoe was a regular tow).
