New old truck that is.



It's a 1974 F250 Supercab Custom, Camper Special, 4x2. It's got a 390 with a C-6 auto. I was hoping for a 4x4, but this one was too nice to pass up. It's all original, only has about 34K miles. The guy I got it from was the second owner and he's had it for about 5 years. The folks he got it from bought it new, added a slide in camper and went back and forth to California a few times. They got tired of that and the truck ended up in storage with very little use.

Fotunately for me, the guy I bought it from did all the hard work of getting the truck back in daily-driver mode. He added a new Edlebrock intake and new 4 barrel, added a Petronix ignition, re-did the brakes and lines, added a Flowmaster dual exhaust, new wheels and tires. He also had the fuel tank cleaned and replaced all the fuel lines. The heater core also was replaced. He ended up not using the truck too much either, about 3000 miles a year.

Unfortuately, it was not kept inside, so the rust has started near the rear of the supercab and over the wheel wells. The cab floor and bed floor are in great shape with no rust at all. Even the tailgate is still pretty decent. The interior is pretty nice, no cracks in the dash, everything works. The driver seat is starting to split. The headliner would be perfect if a mouse hadn't chewed through it right in the middle. It has factory AC, but the guy never re-charged it after replacing the heater core.

Overall, it's a very nice, mostly unmodified original. I plan to drive it a while, then start getting the rusted areas replaced with new metal. The interior needs some clean up, and I think I'll try and buff the paint.

Sorry for the long story, I am pretty excited about my new toy! I drove it the 80 miles from southwest Iowa back to Omaha this evening. It runs and handles very well, didn't miss a beat. There are a couple other pics in my gallery, I'll get some better ones added soon.

Yep, it must be a sickness.

This is the first 390 I've had with a four barrel, it's lots of fun, 'cept I can see the fuel gage drop when I romp on it! Previous owner said he usually got around 10 mpg.

I'm probably going to drive it out to central NE this weekend, I'll see what kind of MPG's I get on the 60mph two-lanes.

 

Rob what did you pay for this truck? Now dont answer this if you dont want to. I am a nosy person. Very nice truck. Hard to find something like that.

 

No problem 150, I meant to include that... I gave $2500 for it. It was a little more than I wanted to pay for a 4x2, but the owner would not negotiate.

 

My old 75 highboy got 8 on average, it had a 390 4 barrel swapped in, but it sure had plenty of power and could pull a trailer without much effort. That was back in the days of cheap fuel though... That is the downside of FE's, they tend to be thirsty. I had 4.10 axles as well, may be something to consider, getting a little more highway friendly gearset if you aren't going to work it hard.

 

According to the VIN and the prior owner, the truck came from the factory with a 4 barrel. He replaced it with the Edelbrock. All the trucks I've owned have been stock, hope the Edelbrock is reliable. He told me I can have the old intake and carb, I think I might take him up on that.

I haven't figured out what axle it's got.

 

Nice find Rob that rig is really clean looking.I havn't seen a club cab Ford in that body style in a long time.

 

Man, how did I miss this thread?? Oh well. So how did it run coming out to my area? What kind of mileage did you get? For being a 74 that is in great shape. I didn't end up driving it out to Kearney. It was so hot that weekend, I chickened out and drove the car with AC. I am looking for an AC shop in Omaha that can service the AC unit in the truck, it supposedly worked until the prior owner replaced the heater core.

I've been getting in the 8 - 10 MPG range. It's kind of fun punching it with that 4bbl!

 

8-10 isn't bad for a 390, and I sure wish that mine had a 4 barrel on it!! I hear you on the AC though. I had my windows down in Kearney and still needed the AC on. I didn't even ask you about it that night.....it just completely slipped my mind. I think the link for that is in the 73-79 forum somewhere, and it's also in the FAQ in the 67-72 forum.
