1998 Ford Explorer Front Axle Whine

I just replaced both speed sensors and the shift motor on the transfer case in my 1998 Explorer - Eddie Bauer edition / Auto Trac / 4 wheel hi and lo.

I replaced them because both lights (4h/4l) would flash simultaneously 6 times, go out then flash again repeatedly. The mechanic at the Ford Dealer said it was either the speed sensors or the transfer case motor. Rather than fix one thing then it be the other I just changed both sensors and the motor.

Right after I changed the motor and sensor my Explorere developed a whining noise from the front end, which sound like it is coming from the driver's side.

Has this happened to anyone else? What did you find out to be the problem and how did you fix it?

might be the hub in the drivver's side front. That's the only 4wd component that I can think of that's there. Other than that I'd think this is an unrelated problem and start troubleshooting steering and suspension.

CV Joint

My 98 Mountaineer had that noise and it turned out to be a broken CV joint in the front driveshaft where it enters the transfer case. Check it by listing front wheels and rotating front driveshaft. The shaft shouldn't rotate seperately from the CV joint.

Are you talking about the UNIVERSAL JOINT?
CV joint is on CV axle (goes from front differential to the wheel).
Universal joints are located on the shaft and that one goes from the transfer case to the differential.

Thanks for your time.
BTW I have the same problem, so could you let me know if that's the case?

Actually, a constant velocity joint can be anywhere they need it to be. My driveshaft has a u-joint on one end and a CV joint on the other end.

Depends on where you source parts from. Look at The major chain stores first, if they don't have it then you've got to choose between the stealer and the junkyard.

They have it at the Parts America, little pricey (somewhere around 260$ plus core).
Will have to check some other places!

If you guys have any suggestions, please be my guest.

Thanks in advance!
