diff. in rear ends

Is there a difference in rear ends from a 72 F100 to a 73 F100? Did they even have 9inch rears in 72 trucks?

Rodney the rears are the same 9 in in the 1/2 ton 2wd. The gear ratios are different for engine size, auto vs sd transmissions.

Yes and before that.

It seems to me that Ford used a Galaxie rear end in the F trucks up to 72. The 73 and up rearend housing is 4 inches wider. The center sections will interchange without trouble. I believe I've read about different depths of center sections but if you stay with a truck gearset you shouldn't have trouble. I'm currently checking to see if the spring mounts will fit from a 73-9 back to a 67-72 frame so I can put the wider rearend in my 68.

Yes, 9 inch rears have been around since 1957 (at least in F series trucks). The only difference would be if you have a Dana 60 rear, as some F-100's did have a Dana 60 with a 5 bolt wheel pattern. My friends 65' F-100 is set up with a Dana 60, and so I wouldn't know why they wouldn't have continued to do the same thing up into the 1970's.
