Painting Plastic Trim

My F-150 is really coming along, and now it's time for the final decision making process and the last steps of the body work.

My truck is a 1994 F-150 XLT with the chrome grill, headlight trim, and bumpers. What I'm wanting to do, because I'm cheap and I don't want to buy new chrome parts, I'm just wanting to prep the grill and the headlight trim doors and paint them black and clear them just like the rest of the truck.

I'm just curious of the correct process for prepping and painting chrome-plated plastic.

Thanks for any insight!

I would wet sand the plastic chrome pieces with 400 grit, prime and paint. You need to scuff the surface to give the primer something to bite into .If not the paint will chip real easy or even peel off.

Sand it with a fine grit (200 or higher), wash it well, rub it down with paint thinner, paint it with Krylon Fusion.

Ahh, Krylon Fusion. Works for me.

Would it hurt to use the DuPont "Nason" Primer, Paint, and Clearcoat, though? That's the paint line that I went with, and I was just curious if it would work on the plastic trim as well.

Thanks fellas!

Thanks, fellas! I'm going to do some question-asking with the paint techs at the paint store and see what all this DuPont "Nason" is good for.

I just painted a door panel from a 73-79 ford with Krylon fusion and I am actually impressed with the adhesion. It is a cheap paint. I am currently trying out color bond from LMC truck for my dash pad, since it is a soft vinyl and that stuff is supposed to be a permanant change in color. I guess I'll wait and see.

Thanks for the info, bucks77ford.

I think that we're going to give it a shot and see what kind of adhesion we get with the DuPont "Nason" kit.

If it doesn't bond, I can always re-prep it and shoot it with Krylon Fusion.
