Help needed on timing chain/set install

Me and my buddy are putting a timing set on his 5.4 in a '99 F-150 and I am wondering what all is involved. I've not put a timing set on a newer mod motor yet and was wondering mostly on keeping it in time and such.

Sometimes the marks on the chains are not real visable. Why are you putting chains in it? They rarely ever fail.

Get a book or CD manual, just to have it on-hand. I could get it from my service CD, but I'd be afraid of making a mistake somewhere and getting you into trouble ...

If you're replacing it because of high-mileage and it's making noise, you ARE changing the tensioners and guides too, right?

For that matter, check all the gears too, if it's making noise, the gears are probably toast.

Anyway, what IS the reason you're doing this?

I'm gonna resurrect this thread , because I'm also rebuilding a 4.6 out of an old cop car and I'm really confused by the diagrams in the Haines manual I have. Does anyone have a link to better timing chain installation tips? Or do you have a better manual you could scan and email to me ? I'm replacing everything just because I want it to be right for a long time again.

Thanks in advance

Ron
