Unhappy V10 or diesel in so cal

I am going to try this question again. With everything I'm reading here and the diesel forum about ULSD and what it could do to the older diesels it makes me worry and wonder. My needs are require a CC and a long bed. The 150 is an option since my other is an 03 Expy that might be downsized for a car of my wifes choice. Anyways, I work in the entertainment industry so it has me driving everywhere with my equipment in side and a little in the bed. Maybe 40 to hundred miles a day. Oh yeah a boat is pulled a few times a year to the river and the lake. Since the Expy pulls it fine I don't see a problem with either engine. The mileage numbers in terms mpg averages 4-5mpg from what I have been reading. Correct me if I am wrong. The fuel prices are another thing with diesel being cheaper than unleaded at one site and more expensive at another. Of course I get the cheapest which has high turnover due to the bigboys always using it. So that and other ?'s brings me to the main topic which one will better serve me and my family? Also take in the fact that I live in southern California, Santa Clarita to be exact. I apologize to the other states since we tend to screwup everything when it comes to the environment. Whatever California does it affects us all. Sorry about my rant. Does my place of residence put a pickle in my decision? Thanks for the input. Please don't let this build into rant about california.

Are you saying you only get 4-5 mpg towing your boat with your 03 Expy yet it "tows it fine"?

I honestly have no idea what you are talking about in your post or what question you may have. Sounds to me though that an F-150 would suit you fine. Get the Super Crew with the 6.5' bed.

Yes, the Expy pulls fine but we are getting rid of it for a smaller car. If I got only 4-5 mpg towing my boat then something is wrong. The difference in mileage is gas vs diesel. I guess maybe aquestion mark in my title might clear things up. An F150 is not an option yet. Should I put all my effort in buying a V10 or 6.0?

This is a decision best left to you personally.

However, I will reiterate the decision process:

1) If you don't mind the smell of diesel.
2) You have the extra $5-6K out-of-pocket upfront (which might be negligable given rebates/inventives) or whatever that's going to increase to with the 6.4
3) You can deal with the maintenance costs.

I'm leaving fuel prices out of it because they are up and down all over now, averaging out that diesel is about the same (or a little more) than 87 octane gas.

If you answer yes to all three questions, get the 6.0

HOWEVER, you did ask in light of the tightening emissions regs in CA. Gassers have been putting up with emissions regs for the last 30 years (more than that, but not so intrusive). The diesels are just now starting to get restricted.

Look at the emissions related problems with the 6.0 - now interpolate that into a new diesel engine with even stricter standards.

It's up to you in the end

Just so you know ,I had Sunrise Ford in Ontario look for a 06 V10.
Found one in Colorado, deisels are stacked up on the lots though.
You would have to order a V10 from what I've learned in the past couple months.

Get the gas unless you like getting raped every time you fill with the diesel in SoCal.

Look under Harrold Ford in Sacramento. Last time I was at their lot, about a week ago, they had a Crew and Super Cab with v-10's, they were 06's. The Crew even had 4.30's.

I think Sunrise wanted you to buy a diesel on their lot. These V-10's at Harrold have been there for quite some time.

I'm going to drive this one til early 07 and see how the new ones look after a couple months. Then I'll start shaking the trees, or pick up a PI crate motor at Rhino engines, and drive it into the ground

I hope I don't come across as a jerk for this post but lately we are getting more and more of these type of questions. V10 or Diesel. This is the V10 forum. A lot of us are past diesel owners and a few of us were stung by the 6.0 PSD's problems.
Of course we are going to recommend the V10.............DUHHHHHH!!!!
If you live at 6000 feet where you need a turbo charged engine, get a Cummins or a Duramax.

Yea , A lot of us just got out of a bad Diesel relationship.
There are so many Diesel sites its not hard to find a ton of places to tell you how Great they are.
"They tow a million pounds get a million miles to the gallon and never ever wear out or break down. And all gas motors suck."

No offense taken Wrench. I know about all the ?'s regarding which powerplant to purchase but it seems my place of residence plays into my decision. I am a current diesel owner and I know what is involved in owning a diesel. My diesel relationship is not a bad one. That is why I am here. For honest input and help in my choice. Nice layout Krewat. I will add that to my notes. Any help is appreciated and I will look at dropping a line in the diesel section. Thank-you

I guess having an address in so cal makes it a little difficult to help in my decision. Not many responses to my inquiry but, oh well, maybe a bit more digging and searching. I had hoped to get some more input into like others have gotten in the past when it came to this question. Thank-you. See ya at the dealership

My V10 is great has never given me a problem. I also tow a boat to the launch ramp, thats because my boat is stored in Havasu. Now mine is not a daily driver, and I have been thinking of a new diesel, with all the rebates it is pretty hard not to at least look. I would be a little leary about the 6.0 you either get a good one or a bad one. If your even considering a diesel then get one or you will always wish you had. BTW I think the v10's are not even around in Cali???

I have never owned or, for that matter ridden in, a deisel truck for any length of time. When I went looking (used) all the deisels I tested had been ridin hard and put away wet. The lag was too much for me to deal with as much daily driving my truck sees.
I got a good deal from a freind on the V10 I own now. He maintained it well and had it serviced before I took ownership.
I bought mine to mainly move material for my company and have four doors because my wife will not drive a mini van. As far as reliability, I know several people who have 150k+ on their V10's.
I pull a 30" TH about 1-2 times a mo. Spin it and it does fine, never pulled with deisel, so I can't comment. I will say I usually tow with a friend who has an older Dodge Cummin's. and he never out runs me but, we never travel more then 65mph.
Locally I get 12mpg Hwy 14mpg Towing who cares, I'm on Vacation

Yeah, the v10's are certainly around California. You just have to look a little harder.

I dealt with this very question back in March. I did a lot of research and looking around. A buddy of mine went with the 6.0 PSD and almost had me talked into one, but at the last minute I went with the v10.

Some things that helped me:
1) The cost was significantly more for the diesel.
2) After riding around with my buddy for a few weeks I did find the smell and noise obnoxious.
3) In my area of California, diesel is not quite as easy to find as regular ol' gasoline.
4) You have to turn the motor off to order in the drive through (small thing I know, but just one more on the list).
4) I spoke with 3 different diesel mechanics and they all said the same thing ... the cost for repair outside the warranty is HUGE. They gave some examples.

Overall, I couldn't be more thrilled with my decision. The truck is fantastic, runs great, pulls my boat with no problem and has plenty of room for the family (CC). I was driving a 1/2 ton (... ummmm Chevy) so this was a big change for me. I like my buddy's PSD and it works great for him, but I wouldn't change for decision for a second! Look hard, do some more research, drive both (I recommend test driving a v10 with a few thousand miles on it for comparison to the PSD), and make a decision. I don't think you will ever regret going with the v10.

Good luck.
Jerry
