1996 idle problem

This is actually about my parents truck,
They have a 1996 F-350 DRW with the E40. The engine has a bad habit of (without any warning) of shutting down if the gas pedal is released. We were coming out of pulling a hill and started to descend it on the other side (at 55mph) and my dad took his foot off it and it just died. We may also be idling at a stop light or something and ---. The engine dosen't sound like its getting starved or anything, no chage in tone or rpm, just suddenly nothing.
