How Do You Remove The Ignition Switch
I read the ignition switch post below but it does not have a year associated with it. I have a 92 explorer, tilt wheel cruise in the wheel, 5 speed manual and need to replace the ignition switch. What do I need to do? If I do replace the ignition switch do I have to run around with two keys, one for the door and another for the ignition or can I rekey them to use the same key and if so where can I get that done or is it cost prohibitive? Main concern right now is getting the new ignition switch in.

can't help with the ignition switch, but when I first got my 97 (used) all the exterior lock cylinder were frozen (previous owner never ever used them!... always used the fob or the key pad). In any case, I was able to buy three new cylinders from the dealer (~25/ea if memory serves) and then was able to key them based on my key. You need a caliper to measure the key and then some patience to assemble the lock. Once you do the first one the other two are a breeze.

The ignition switch mounts on the steering column under the plastic shroud
Remove the shroud & 2 screws from the ignition switch.
Your Haynes manual, will tell you how to do it.
If the ignition switch is causing your cutting out problem -from your other thread-theres no reason to replace the lock cylinder.

I think I understand now, when you said ignition switch I was thinking the thing you put the key in was the ignition switch. What I am now understanding is the ignition switch is an actually some kind of "switch" under the plastic shroud! Is this switch under the upper or lower shroud or do I just take both of them off? And just what exactly does this switch look like/or approx how many wires does it have going to it? I do not have my manual with me right now at work so I'm just trying to get a feel for what I am getting myself into. I hate to just throw parts at it but I priced an ignition switch and it was only about $10-$15 so I thought I might just give it a try. I looked in my manual for the location of that neutral switch that the code indicates is giving the problem an it says it's on top of the transmission well there is no switch on top of the transmission just 1 switch on each side of it so I have no idea which one to look at. aarrrggggghhhhhh
