Swap in new Ford brake controller?

I have an '06 factory trailer brake controller. Does anyone know how to make it work in a 2000?

Do you mean taking a tow command system out of an 06 and putting it into an 00?

Yes, that's what i mean. I only have the controller & the 2006 axles. I don't want to change out my master cylinder or anything. Just looking for a simple way to hook it up & make it work. I realize i most likely wouldn't have the ABS sensitive feature.

My understanding from reading on these forums is that you will have to change at least the master cylinder as it regulates the amount of brake required for the trailer by how hard the pedal is depressed.

In short...it's alot of work and expense. I wanted to do this in my '05 Excursion, but decided against it.

Is it not possible to simply tap a brake wire that increases gain by voltage?

As far as I know there is no easy way. In addition to the new master cylinder it also ties into the truck's computer so unless you are going to swap that as well I don't think there is a way to do it.

Sure...where would one find that wire? All brake light switches are on-off.

I've already found a brake wire that gets power when the pedal is depressed. I use it for the exhaust brake i wired up. I was thinking this brake controller would need to come on smooth though, to sense the pressure being applied to the brakes.

7.3, you are confusing an aftermarket controller to the Ford unit.

An aftermaket unit only needs a on-off type connection from a brake light as the controller itself has adjustment for how fast the attack is, and how much braking is needed.

The Ford unit MUST be tied to the master cylinder so that it knows how much trailer braking to apply.

It also needs to be tied into the '05 or newer computer to work properly. Any computer older than '05 won't do. The '05 and newer are different than all the older ones and won't work in an older truck.

Um, BIG problem here.

1) The '06 Ford brake controller talks to the PCM and ABS module.
2) the language these things talk changed in 2005.

In effect, everything's different. You can't put a 2006 brake controller (integrated with the ABS for braking) into a pre-'05.

Guess its another old truck part to try selling on eBay. I really thought it might just work like a regular brake controller. Oh, well.

7.3, if it's "factory" 2006, it's not usable. If it's a Ford brake controller for your 2000 manufactured in 2006, that might be different.

Tell us the history on the part.

I got it off of a 2006 F-350. Took the whole dash when i took the suspension & axles. Would've grabbed the master cylinder if i'd known. Then again, it was a 5.4 so it didn't have hydroboost. Would it not have worked anyway? Its no big deal. I just thought it might work. I'll try to sell it. I'd rather save up for a good exhaust brake over trailer brakes anyway.

Pretty much, it wouldn't have worked no matter what.

It's always a good thing to have trailer brakes, but the highly-integrated brake controller in the '05-up is magic, according to lots of people on this site.
