look at mustangs from '87 and younger (95 is the last year before 4.6). Although I dont even think they put roller lifters in untill '91, the blocks are the same except the lifters and pushrods. If you can, I would find a wrecked 5.0L explorer for the engine, they have GT-40 heads, which are great performers.

What part of 1985 did you not understand???
Also, the blocks are not exactly the same. The roller blocks have higher bosses for the lifters and are already threaded for the retainer.
I once converted a non-roller block using a retro-roller kit.......kinda dumb. By the time I sourced the kit and the fact you have to use a small base circle cam that's custom ground to take advantage of the steeper lobes you can use, I could have bought 3 factory roller blocks @ $100-$150 a pop.

I suggested '87 and later model 5.0Ls because of the E7s, and better yet a 5.0L from an explorer because of the gt40s. When I tore down the 85 out of my brothers truck it had hydraulic flat tappet lifters, when I rebuilt my cousins 92 stang's 5.0L it had hydraulic rollerized lifters, my 88 core was the same as the 85 out of my brothers truck. Maybe you mis-understood my post, I was stating that later model 5.0Ls have actuall rollers on the lifters.

The original question is, "When did the 5.0 factroy roller block begin?"
And the answer is in 1985.......The 1985 Mustangs had roller lifters.
Now, when he asks about heads or what blocks will support roller lifters........we can cut and paste your informative post...........until then, the 1st 5.0 roller blocks were in 1985. And yes, they had roller lifters.

Yes, 1985 is the first year of roller blocks and I'm 99% sure that they were only in Mustangs (Capri's) until about 1987 (or was it '89?), then they went into trucks and bigger cars. The block could have been used without the lifters, so that is why you might have seen one in a truck. I have a '87 engine from a Ford Van and it does not have a roller block.

Roller blocks started in the 85 model year, making it possible to find one dated in 84. The 85 blocks, casting number E5AE-HA, are a little less strong than the 86-up blocks. The 86-2001 blocks have 4 more lbs of iron added, mostly in the deck and have semi-siamesed cylinder bores. These were used in ALL applications, car, truck, Stang, van, it doesn't matter, they all used the same block. And the cars (not Stangs) had roller cams as well starting with the 86 model year. Trucks got roller cams starting in 92.
