P0420 & P0430 on 97 4.6L

The light came on in my dad's 97 and my brother and I pulled the codes and found P0420 & P0430. These are catalyst system efficency below threshold banks 1 & 2. Anyone have any experience with these codes or any advice? Thanks in advance.

It is saying that the cats are not working properly. I would check to make sure that the rear O2 sensors are not unplugged.

OK, thanks Jimmy. I'll go and check that and see what I find. We've replaced both the back O2 sensors, so it is possible they aren't plugged in good, but it would be very odd for both of them to be loose all of the sudden.

There's nothing wrong with the O2 sensors, either upstream or downstream.

Your cats are most likely toast.

Do a search of the full-text TSBs for those codes.

The O2 sensors were plugged in good so the problem is somewhere else. I did look in the full-text TSB's and found the whole list of possible causes. I will check these out as I have time, etc. Could the cats really be bad? This pickup only has 130,000 mi. Thanks again
