Stupid ? why the big swing in PSD mpg and not V10 mpg

I was checking on the PSD forum and I was wondering how they have such wide swings in mpg? Some are getting 22 hwy others with the same configuration are getting 12 or 14 hwy, the city numbers have as big of a swing. Most of the v10 numbers are so close it is not even funny. When you do see the guy getting better mpg his truck is normally lighter (regular vs CC type stuff) or they drive slower, you get the idea there is a reason. even then the difference is small 1-3 mpg.

Probably an aftermarket chip. The diesels can gain more MPG from the chips than the V10s.

It's an interesting phenomena...

Chips do have something to do with it, but 22MPG?

I'm sure you'll hear more from the other guys here, a little more tongue-in-cheek than I'm going to be

Ive put a lot of miles on all of the new diesels. I can garentee you going 75 on the highway all these truck are going to get about 17mpg hand calcd. Sure the will get 22mpg, but at 55mph. Or they are chiped and looking at the dic which will be way high on a chiped truck.

I had a Cummins diesel before I bought the V10...I could get 21 at a constant 55 mph, but mostly got 16-17 back and forth to work....my V10 gets 13.6-14.3 on the same route....plus, diesel fuel here is $.40 higher than gas...

I get 10 towing with the V10 and got 11-12 with the diesel.

A lot of folks told me I would get amazing mpg with the diesel...balogna!!!!!

As with any engine, mostly it depends on your right foot. The heavier your right foot is, the worse the mileage. That and from what I've seen of the specs on V10 drivetrains, you're maxed out on rpms with 3.73's and 4.11's. And that makes for a consistent mileage. Drop some higher gears in there and you'll likely see mileage swings larger than you do now. Your worst will stay about what you get now, but drive with a lighter foot and I'd bet your best comes up more than what you're getting now. Ford designed the V10 drivetrain for pulling, not MPG.

One other plus the diesel boys have got now, is the introduction of Biodiesel, run it and the mileage goes up. Run the V10 with E85 and it goes down.

Couple of things:
1. Speed. Diesels are effected more by the speed you travel because up at 75+mph you start getting into more rpms and more boost, which means more fuel. The v10 isn't changed as much by this, just a small amount usually.
2. Chips. These can have a large effect and increase milage by a suprising amount from what i've read up there, or they can make the milage go down if one likes to turn the settings all the way up and hotrod all over the place.
3. Fabrication. SOME diesel guys need to justify their $5000+ option with overly optimistic numbers and like to 'fib' a little bit. Notice i said some, don't flame me diesel lurkers

Well actually, the V10 is not properly setup to run E85, so therefore the mileage will not go down.

It is true that all/most gas engines that run E10 will notice a slight decrease in mpg, but will see an increase in power. So again, the MORE power takes the mpg down.

In regards to the diesel engines out there now...the reason they are getting only 15/17 mpg is due to the power. If FORD would reduce the hp and torque ratings, then the mpg would increase. What is more important right now anyway? IMHO...it is mpg not hp/torque. Especially in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. The 7.3L did the job just fine...and more reliable too. With an added bonus of better mpg.

biz

Not what I've heard and read about E85. BIG drop in mileage. As for more power, that I doubt. Yea, the octane rating's a lot higher, but more octane doesn't make more power unless the comp ratio can be substantially raised or timing can be advanced far enough to take advantage of the knock resistence. Mileage drop I've heard is about 30-40%. Alcohol just doesn't have the BTU content of straight gasoline.

Thumbs down 2 trolls

sounds more like 2 trolls came down again from posts 4,5,8 and 9.
hay stay up stairs we don't to listen to psd bs. been there had them don't want them again. another at least we tell the truth about our mpgs. mostly 13 or 14 with a now and then 15 to 16 under the best conditions as the best tank loads.

now as to mpgs! i don't give a flamer about it. as my v10 can do the same work as a diesel when loaded . with out making all that noise. plus i can hear my wife and radio when it's turned down low and at the same time hear the road around me.

sorry guys but at my age and retired from fixing what you diesel lovers break every day. i plainly don't want to hear the bs that comes from some of you guys.

i havent gotten to run through a full tank where i havent been pulling or hauling a ton of cement, my 6000lb p-wash trailer or our 12k skid steer rig, but so far towing is about 8 for skid steer, 10-11 for p-wash trailer and 11-13 mixed city highway
