Help!!!
I had an "86" F150 4X4 dropped in my lap. The eng was out of a Bronco year unknown, the tranny is blown. Or i think it is, it only has rev. Needing help because im a woman and have no clue what im doing. heehe If i knew if the eng was ok for the truck i could look around for a used tranny.

What exactly are you asking for? I don't think there's much anybody can do for you online. If you can take the tranny out, then at least you could do some testing to see if the engine is decent. Is this a possibility for you? Manual or automatic? Will it run? Does it go into neutral if auto?

Yes it runs, yes it will go in neutral. It only had rev.The eng sounds good just dont know what kind of tranny it has or needs. And if i get one will the eng blow it up again?? The ex said it was a DO3 with over/drive. But everyone i have asked about it didnt know what i was talking about. I do have a book for it and couldnt find a DO3 in it either. I could pull it but hell i dont know what im doing.... So if i knew what i was needing before hand i could talk someone into helping me im sure.

I'm too far away to be of any help, but maybe someone from that area will read this post soon and be willing to spare a few hours to help out.

He(the ex) said it had been going out for a year. It didnt have overdirve or something. He swore it had 1st but it doesnt. I just dont want to put money i dont have into it if it is just going to mess up again. I really like the truck and it will save me from having to go buy a car/van big enough for the kids.

If you weren't 4 hours away from me, I d be in a better postion to help, but cost is a problem there, and I din't care to work away from my shop, as it never fails, I end up needing something that was left behind... If the overdrive was 9out, it was pretty much a matter of time before the rest followed. The AOD's were known for trouble... they can be a good trans for general use, but work them, and they don't tend to hold up as well. If you get a used trans try to find one with a guarantee, some yards sell them with 1 month to 3 month guarantees. Otherwise, a rebuilt is the way to go, but can get pricey sometimes, but will have a guarantee behind them better than the used tranny's will.

I would suggest if at all possible to take it to a local mechanic, preferably someone you know and trust, and ask them to give the whole truck the once over. The same thing they would do if you were looking to purchase the vehicle. They may charge a small fee ($30-$50 or in that ballpark) but better to find out any other problems now rather than after you invest in another tranny. The should offer some advice on that, too.

Any progress?
I'll confess that my knowledge of Ford transmissions isn't great. I know that older GMs often lost forward gears before reverse due to fluid flow and that changing the transmission pan filter was a 50/50 chance of solving the issue. Does that apply here? I need some input. If there's a chance that it's worthwhile, I'm certainly close enough to change it for her.
