1948 Coleman 4x4 conversion

Hey everyone!!! All right here it is. I have found a Coleman 4x4 Conversion for a 48-50 F-5 or F-6! I have never seen this before. Does anyone know anything about these conversions? I think it would make my stake-bed be really one of a kind! Any info would be great!! Thanks guys!!

Jeff - The only concern I'd have is finding parts and repair manuals. The Coleman conversions are even less common than Marmon-Herringtons. Another option is the F-5 M-H in Georgia that Captradiator has listed in his gallery. It belongs to a friend of his who wants to keep it from going to the crusher. Sounds like you could have it cheap too. There were enough of those conversions done that Chuck Mantiglia might be able to help with parts and any service needs.

Jeff - If you aren't familiar with Chuck Mantiglia, he runs Chuck's Trucks and specializes in M-Hs. You can see his work at www.chuckstrucksllc.com. Stu

I would just like to thank you guys for the help! I contacted Chuck Mantiglia on my thoughts of buying the Coleman conversion listed on E-bay. He was a tramendous help. He pretty much steered me away from the Coleman due to the fact that they are rare and hard to find parts for, He also said that M-H was directly involved with Ford in the design of there system for Ford trucks. I have decided to buy some items from him directly. He has many parts for M-H systems and i can tell he is sincerely devoted to Ford trucks and guys like us. Also, it would appear that i am going to need a 5.83 gear for my 2 speed rearend for this system to work. If anyone knows of one, please do let me know! Once again than you to all for the help.

Look for an F-4. I believe they had the same rearends as the F-5, but most had the 5.83 ratio. About the Coleman, I would not want to try to find parts for the steering knuckles.

Is Captradiator's truck an option for the rear end? If, Jeff, you have room to store the pieces, having extra drive train parts can be a life saver. I found a bare M-H frame that yielded a treasure-trove of spares. Also, Captradiator's truck with have the Marmon-Herrington badges and front hub caps that are otherwise impossible to find. I've got three of the real hub caps and made a fourth one out of fiber glass. I couldn't find another real one and Chuck didn't have any extras.

Truckdog and 1952 Henry-

I would love to have a spare truck, trust me! It's not that i dont have the room, i do. Its jsut that i dont have the money!! Being that i am only 21 going to school full time and trying to work 45hrs. a week and pay all my bills really puts a cramp on my ever loving passion for these trucks. i have just enough saved up to drive out to Coneticut and see Chuck. Another 500 for the parts truck plus fuel to get it, i would need another 800 or so. Would need a month or two to save that kind of money. Now if Captradiator once to hold onto it for that long going on my good word, i would gladly buy it from his friend! Thanks again guys! I leave next Fri. for Chuck's, hopefully!!

Jeff - I absolutely understand about commitment of resources. We all face that dilemma. I'll bet Captradiator's buddy isn't in any more of a hurry than he's been in for the past few years. Enjoy your visit with Chuck. I did.

I just thought I would drop this into this thread. I saw this post on the Ford Barn web site this morning:

I may have a 49 or 50 (cant remember which year) f6 that Im gonna sell soon- it was a runner till i swiped the flathead out of it. its got the marmon-harrington 4wd on it- pretty cool old hardware.

From the guy's posting name, he's located in WA. Just thought someone might be interested.

I saw that too on Ford Barn. To my view the guy could have found a better source for a flat motor and left that fully functional truck alone. Somebody needs to take one of their spare engines and put that big guy back on the road.
