If you use WVO before you can begin the Process you must remove any suspended particles: pieces of French Fries, crumbs of chicken crust, broken wontons, and etc.
You must also eliminate any water mixed with the oil.

These are must steps, especially the water, and heating does both; it allows suspended particles to settle quicker makes straining easier and causes the water to evaporate faster.

thanks

Go here for a complete shopping list and a set of how-to insturctions:

Maria Alovert (Girl Mark) got her stuff at Harbor Freight, Lowe's, Home Depot, and various hardware stores. She describes the best places to buy the different components. Well worth reading. In fact, I bought her book and used it as the blueprint for my setup.

Up to you. It's probably a 30 gallon WH. Keep in mind your percentages and how they effect the total size of the batch of bioD you want to make. I went with a 50 gallon unit, so I can make around 30 gallons of bioD at a time.

I bought a new unit; I was kinda worried about all the nasty crap inside an old WH. Even if I tried to clean it out, it's a closed system, and I'd never know for sure just how clean the inside really was. I didn't want to deal with contamination problems while trying to learn a totally new process.

The problem with using a water heater that someone has thrown out, is that it's probably leaking already.
